Today, we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Walker.
Hi Victoria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Camden, New Jersey, and grew up in foster care until I was adopted and we moved to Cherry Hill.
Growing up was rough between home life and school bullies, but I was always intrigued with problem-solving and reading. I started repairing iPhones, iPods, and various electronic gadgets when I was 16. and eager to secure stable employment in the industry, I pursued an education at ITT Tech, where I was asked to join a robotic club and help with coding projects. This experience sparked an idea for a mobile app, which led me to teach myself to code so I could develop it myself. However, navigating the complexities of outsourcing development proved challenging due to communication barriers and cost constraints.
Determined to address these hurdles, I transitioned into a career as a software engineer, with the goal of establishing a business to assist non-technical founders in efficiently and affordably bringing their app ideas to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship is rarely a smooth journey, and mine was no exception. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed an immediate threat to my job security as a software engineer, which I needed experience in to start a business knowing what to expect from employees.
I initially struggled with the misconception that I needed every aspect of my business perfectly planned before taking the plunge. This led to creating a list of services that I later realized were not aligned with my interests or expertise. Furthermore, my eagerness to accommodate clients and mitigate costs resulted in personal financial strain when clients hesitated to pay already discounted invoices. It got to a point where I felt bullied by my clients!
The quality of developers I engaged with also fell short of expectations, resulting in client dissatisfaction. I also didn’t know anything about business finances, so when creating a business bank account, they requested my “Certificate of Good Standing” that my business was VOID for missing Annual Tax Reports. Very expensive mistake to correct! These are just a few obstacles I have encountered, but through it all, my main takeaways are THE PRICE IS THE PRICE, and I expect to fail the first time I do anything new.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was extremely kind even when the world gave me zero reasons to be. My parents were churchgoers, so I spent a lot of time in church. I read a lot of books, played the piano and the violin, and loved problem-solving, so I would always try DIY projects. I also loved playing basketball, dancing, and running.
