Today, we’d like to introduce you to Phoenix Washington.
Hi Phoenix, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised on the west side of Chicago. I got my acting inspiration from watching classic films like The Defiant Ones and In the Heat of the Night. Heat, Training Day, classics. I learned from the famous Second City Improv alumni and combined with a background in theater, I honed my acting chops on stage through improv shows and played simultaneously. While an undergraduate student at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, I was among the original eight members of “Subject to Change,” an award-winning improv troupe in Grand Rapids.
Since my professional career began in Atlanta in 2015, I have starred in numerous films, television series, and digital shows, including “Fatal Attraction,” “Your Worst Nightmare,” and Discovery ID’s “Murder Calls.” Additionally, I star as Klay Denard in the TV series “Coin$,” which can be seen on all streaming platforms.
Most recently, I was offered a guest starring role on season two of the independently produced comedy series, “Everyone is Doing Great,” created by “One Tree Hill” alum James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti, acting opposite one of the show’s lead characters. I now reside in Los Angeles, where I perform at improv shows and acting showcases as I continue to work to become one of this generation’s greatest artists.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Eh, smooth would be subjective. I’m grateful for every step of the journey. Forward backward or laterally. There’s no clear path to success in this profession we’ve chosen. My whole life is a leap of faith. I’m just workin and lettin God do His thing.
People will try to derail you. People will belittle you, say they don’t believe in you, and everything else. It’s up to you as an artist to decide that this is what I want to do and no one is gonna knock me off my square. Period.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Actor who can do it all. Make you laugh, evoke real emotion, place you on the edge of your seat.
I am a dynamic actor, I have incredible range. I’m not limited to a single medium. I act, I write, I produce. I direct. I’m a voice over artist as well, I have incredible vocal range. I’m a character actor. Think Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Bill Hader, Fred Armisen. I can do anything. I’m good at everything.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Man, ask the people you look up to. You might have a mentor already and not even know it. Find someone who’s already doing what you want to do and ask how often you can follow them around.
Soak up as much as you can!
