Today, we’d like to introduce you to Katelynn Draper.
Hi Katelynn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dance is not just an art form for some; it’s a calling that resonates deep within their very being. For me, dance has always been so much more than just movement; it is a language of the soul that began long before birth. It has helped transform my mind and body, equipping me with the tools to navigate the complexities of life.
From the tender age of 2 1/2, all I wanted to do was move my body. Encouraged by my mother who was once a dancer herself, I took my first steps into the world of dance, and it was love at first tendu. Under the tutelage of a competitive dance studio, the stage became my second home. While competitions drove many young dancers, for me, it was the transformative power of performance that ignited my passion. Winning was secondary; the true joy lay in captivating an audience and leaving them spellbound. Rituals and discipline became my allies, shaping my pre-performance routine into a sacred meditation.
From a young age, I also discovered a passion for educating and found joy in opening young minds to the art of dance. For me, teaching dance was not just about imparting dance steps; but about using dance as a vehicle to teach life’s most profound lessons. Teaching and Choreographing have helped shape me into the dancer I am today. I have learned to tap into my “gut” and trust my instincts as a mover. Choreographing is another feeling of ritual for me and it feels like I am always painting new canvases with bodies.
I was incredibly lucky to deepen my dance education with summers spent dancing in New York City. Here is where I was introduced to many dance luminaries such as Frank Hatchett and Shelia Barker, enriching my repertoire and fueling my artistic growth. Dance conventions also became a playground for exploration, offering invaluable experiences and insights into the industry. The journey continued with performances for the Miami Heat and spirited participation in MTV’s dance contest for the movie Burlesque.
I performed for many charity events and assisted living homes and loved giving back to the community. College beckoned at the prestigious New World School of the Arts, where I delved into the realms of the concert dance world. I discovered the nuanced interplay between the two worlds of commercial and concert dancing. Performances became a canvas for artistic expression, showcasing works by esteemed choreographers and artists. I spent a summer on the grounds of Jacob’s Pillow, amidst the verdant beauty of the Berkshires, it was a journey that took an unforgettable turn.
With a full-paid scholarship in hand, I embarked on a summer that would redefine my relationship with dance and the world around me. This journey allowed me to return to my roots and I found myself drawn to competitive dance studios, where I discovered a passion for mentoring young dancers. Leading numerous competitive dance teams, I have had the privilege of imparting my knowledge and experiences to the next generation of performers.
I recently relocated from South Florida to Atlanta, where I am currently living and working. I am thrilled to be a part of the dynamic dance community here, working full-time as a dance instructor at Woodward Academy and also collaborating with the pickup company Axam Dance Theatre Experience. In addition to my teaching commitments, I am dedicated to honing my craft and expanding my artistic horizons. I regularly attend classes at Xcel to further develop my skills and make valuable connections within the dance community.
Recently, I’ve been exploring the world of musical theatre, eager to bring my unique perspective and style to this exciting genre. I am looking forward to delving deeper into this new avenue and expanding my repertoire. My ultimate goal is to not only teach and perform but also to choreograph and contribute to the vibrant Atlanta dance scene. I am passionate about bridging the gap between art and life and am excited to see where this journey takes me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been far from easy. There were moments filled with doubt and self-sabotage, days when I questioned whether this path was truly meant for me. It often felt like I was alone in this struggle, but I’ve come to realize that many artists and individuals share these challenges, offering understanding and solidarity.
The true struggle emerged when I had to rely solely on my own determination to pursue my dreams. While I’ve been fortunate to have support and guidance from mentors and loved ones, the journey ultimately comes down to facing oneself and one’s own thoughts. It’s a battle against feelings of inadequacy, the belief that there are countless others who could do what you do.
However, amidst these challenges lies a profound truth: there is no one else in the world quite like you. Each of us possesses a unique thumbprint, a distinctive essence that sets us apart. Embracing this individuality is key to overcoming the obstacles that come our way.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
