Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Douglas.
Hi Alana, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was younger, I absolutely did not like the way my mother styled my hair. Not to say she did a bad job but as a kid becoming a teenager and having my own idea of how I wanted my hair to look, something HAD to give! I told her she couldn’t touch my head, and it was me and YouTube after that . In middle school, I would give myself individual braids all the time. Once I got to high school, family and friends started to notice my hair and would ask who had done it. That’s when I realized I was good at braiding. Then I started to do all my family members’ hair just because. During my freshman year of college in 2018, I started to meet new people. My closest friend at the time saw that I did my own hair and all my family members’ hair as well. She instantly had me do her hair EVERY TIME she needed it done; not only did I have to do her hair, but she made me make an Instagram and Twitter account so that I could post to let everyone on campus know that I DO HAIR! Her belief in me gave me so much inspiration; I started to love doing hair and love the feedback, and it became my happy place. While still in school I was able to build my clientele and build new relationships through social media.
After graduating from Clayton State University in December 2022, I set goals to take my career in the beauty Industry to the next level. Through the process of it all I had a couple doors slammed in my face and bumps in the road but with a thousand nos comes and yes! October 2023, my salon home found me! All that studio welcomed me with open arms and has been super supportive to me and my journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had?
Overall the path to where I am has been a experience that is continuous. I say that to say getting to where I am today has not been easy. I’m self taught, starting five years ago. A lot of what I know has been trial and error in all aspects. I went from doing hair in my the family kitchen, my dorm room, then to being a travel hairstylist and now I’m in a multi-creative space with other artists. All of which has its pros and cons, the challenges that I have faced has yet stop me from doing what I love. Thus far I’ve felt every emotion. The good ones and especially the bad ones. It’s been beautiful. The path to get here has been exactly what its meant to be.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
