Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Moitoso.
Hi Evan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I began producing and selling my music around July 2020. There were a culmination of factors that led me to making the music I was making around that time, which were the environment around me and the music I was listening to. I got into hip-hop/rap music through artists like 6 Dogs, Lil Yachty, and Lil Skies, so my earliest produced beats resembled their sound and the producers around them at the time (e.g. earlonthebeat, daniel hartzog, childboy, and pretty pacc). Through the next couple months, I began to develop a love for making beats, so I continued it through my junior year. Over this time, I started reaching out to producers and artists in the Atlanta area, hoping to network my name and sound into the city, and around June 2022, I moved to Atlanta from South Georgia for college, which allowed me to network even more. Across the last two years of living in Atlanta, producing and networking are things that occur in my life only all the time. Being constantly surrounded by the industry you love provides you with motivation and inspiration, of which lets me perpetuate even better music. Developing and enriching the relationships around me has given me the opportunity to work with artists like Baby Kia, kodak black, or lil got it, helping me brand a name and a new sound. Right now, I’m currently working on creating a new genre within Atlanta, called plugghouse. It’s a blend of pluggnb style samples and groovy jazz house drums, creating a bounce and sound that’ll take over very soon. I plan to release music this year, of which’ll focus around this sound with growing Atlanta artists. lost and turnt volume one coming soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. As a producer, you have to be ready to face all sorts of difficult challenges with your marketing, networking, and competition. Initially, it was hard for me to get myself into certain rooms with other producers and artists, as I hadn’t established who I was or created a credible name for myself. There have also been many times where I’ve had to scrap projects or ideas from my head because of their potential lack of appeal or lack of a good mix; anyone within the music industry can understand or relate to writer’s block.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a music producer and samplemaker. For preface, a beat can be broken down into two large components: the drums and the sample. I tend to work more with making the sample or loop. However, I am always looking to try something new or get involved with other lanes of the music industry, as I have strong interests with engineering & recording, film scoring, or administrative roles (e.g. a&r). From the perspective of myself and other folks around me, I am known for my consistency and reliability. Every day, I’m following up with networking, sending samples out to other producers, or coming up with different ways to brand myself. I’m most proud of being able to be myself through any situation or environment. Everybody knows me for me, not from a song, a sound, but my work ethic and personality. I have always tried to stay as personable, understanding, and hard-working as possible through my music career, and I think this has set me apart from others. People within the industry can always come back to me and rely on my presence because they know what I do, how well I deliver it, and how well I maintain the relationship. These characteristics are what I continue to build my name around.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
When something good or bad happens to me, I try not to convince myself that it was good or bad luck that affected the outcome. I believe that things were destined and meant for me, whether it’s a setback or a motivator. From my perspective, luck takes credibility or accountability away from the person receiving something. Everything happens for a reason.
