Inspiring Conversations with James Grant of Georgia Trial Attorneys at Kirchen & Grant

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Grant.

James Grant

Hi James, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So, here’s the deal. After busting my butt at Georgia Tech and Faulkner Law, I dove headfirst into the legal world. I kicked off my career as an Assistant Solicitor-General and then transitioned to private practice as a Senior Associate Attorney. Those early years were a wild ride, giving me a crash course in both criminal and civil litigation.

That’s when I crossed paths with my future business partner, Mark Kirchen. We were both working at a general litigation firm and after a few months, we realized we had something special. We took a leap of faith and launched Georgia Trial Attorneys in January of 2015. Picture two idealistic lawyers with sky-high ambitions and zero business know-how. Because apparently, equipping lawyers with business skills isn’t a priority for state bars across the country, even though it could solve a boatload of problems in the legal profession. Go figure.

Despite the odds, we managed to grow a thriving and profitable law firm over the first couple of years. But the business was totally dependent on us. Without Mark and me in the picture, things would grind to a screeching halt. That’s when we made a game-changing decision to hire a business coach. Little did we know it would become one of the most defining moments for our personal, professional, and financial lives.

With our coach’s guidance, a lightbulb went off. We decided to flip the script on personal injury law with a simple but powerful idea: we’d become the go-to litigation team for other personal injury firms. Essentially, we’d handle all the courtroom fireworks so they could focus on crushing it in other areas.

The magic of our model is that everyone comes out on top. Injured victims get the compensation they deserve, our partner firms get to grow and flourish, and we get to do what we love day in and day out. It’s a total game-changer.

Of course, life isn’t all depositions and trial prep. When I’m not fighting the good fight in the courtroom, you can catch me pumping iron for strongman competitions or perfecting my swing on the golf course. And nothing beats quality time with my awesome wife Meredith and our two incredible kiddos, James and Leah. Gotta keep that work-life balance in check, am I right?

My story’s still unfolding, one chapter at a time. But one thing’s for sure: I’m in this for the long haul, ready to tackle whatever challenges come our way and always striving to be a force for good. And you know what? I’m just getting warmed up.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Not exactly. But that’s the thing about entrepreneurship – it’s a constant roller coaster ride with plenty of ups and downs. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The struggles and challenges I’ve faced have been some of my greatest teachers, pushing me to grow, adapt, and become a better version of myself.

When I first started out as an Assistant Solicitor-General and then as a Senior Associate Attorney, I had my fair share of bumps in the road. I was learning the ropes, navigating complex cases, and trying to establish myself in a competitive field. But those early challenges taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and thinking on my feet.

Then, when Mark and I launched Georgia Trial Attorneys, we were in for a wild ride. Picture two lawyers with big dreams but zero business experience trying to get a law firm off the ground. We were flying by the seat of our pants, figuring things out as we went. There were definitely moments of doubt and uncertainty, especially in those early days when we were working out of Mark’s basement, wondering if we’d made the right choice.

As our firm grew, we faced a whole new set of challenges. Scaling a business is no joke – it’s like trying to change the tires on a car while it’s speeding down the highway. We had to learn how to manage a growing team, streamline our processes, and maintain the high-quality service our clients had come to expect. And, of course, there was the constant juggling act of trying to balance our professional and personal lives.

But here’s the thing – every single one of those struggles has been an opportunity for growth. They’ve forced me to get creative, to think outside the box, and to develop a mental toughness that serves me well both in and out of the courtroom. I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding obstacles – it’s about facing them head-on and using them as fuel to propel you forward.

Looking back, I can honestly say that the challenges I’ve faced have been some of the most defining moments of my journey. They’ve shaped me into the leader, the lawyer, and the person I am today. And while I know there will be plenty more twists and turns ahead, I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and pushing myself to be the best I can be.

As you know, we’re big fans of Georgia Trial Attorneys at Kirchen & Grant, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Georgia Trial Attorneys, co-founded by Attorneys James Grant and Mark Kirchen in 2015, is a unique law firm that serves as an outsourced litigation department for personal injury law firms across the southeast. Our mission is to help our partner firms make more money faster and with less stress by taking on the complex, time-consuming, and expensive process of litigation, allowing them to focus on their marketing, sales, and handling pre-litigation cases.

What sets Georgia Trial Attorneys apart is our unwavering commitment to being a true partner to our clients. We understand that the legal industry can be highly competitive, which is why we have made a conscious decision to focus solely on working with law firm owners and not compete for pre-litigation cases. This approach helps our partners avoid increased costs of acquisition and ensures that our interests are always aligned with theirs.

Our tagline, “Let’s Get Lit(igation),” encapsulates our passion for litigation and our drive to help our partners and their clients succeed. In an industry where relationships matter, we have built a reputation for establishing strong, long-lasting partnerships with our clients. We believe that our focus on collaboration, transparency, and shared success sets us apart and positions us as the go-to choice for personal injury firms looking to outsource their litigation needs.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Oh man, that’s a tough one. There are so many great moments that come to mind, but if I had to pick just one, it would probably be the time I got to caddy for my dad at the 1999 US Senior Open in Des Moines, Iowa.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about my dad, Jim ‘Mudcat’ Grant. He’s a legend in the golfing world – a three-time All-American, renowned amateur, the low amateur in the 1966 Masters, and a former PGA Tour player. He’s been the director of instruction at The Standard Club for over three decades. So, growing up, I always knew my dad was a big deal in the golf scene, but it wasn’t until that trip to Iowa that I really got to see him in action.

I remember flying out there with my parents, feeling like a kid on Christmas morning. I was so excited to be a part of this major tournament and to see my dad doing what he loved. And let me tell you the way those tour pros were treated – it was like they were royalty. Everywhere we went, people were coming up to my dad, shaking his hand, and reminiscing about old times. It was like watching a bunch of old friends pick up right where they left off.

But the real magic happened when I got to caddy for my dad during the tournament. Seeing him out there on the course, totally in his element, was incredible. I mean, I had always known he was a great golfer, but watching him play alongside the other pros gave me a whole new level of appreciation for his skills and dedication.

So, yeah, that’s probably my favorite childhood memory. It’s a moment that I’ll always remember. And even though I didn’t end up following in his footsteps as a professional golfer, I like to think that I’ve carried those same principles of hard work, dedication, and humility into my own career as a lawyer and entrepreneur.
