Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Willen
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
At the age of 40, I consider myself retired from journalism, but busy as a full-time artist.
My career journey has been both dynamic and fulfilling.
My career as a journalist began in 2008 when I moved from Michigan to Southwest Florida.
This transition marked the start of an exciting chapter in my life, where I had the opportunity to cover a wide range of stories, from tropical storms to rallies held by former President Obama.
Each experience deepened my understanding of the field and enhanced my skills in news reporting and storytelling.
Driven by a passion for digital media and on-camera work, I made the decision to leave Florida and explore new opportunities.
This led me to Atlanta, Georgia, where I spent over 15 years working with esteemed organizations such as CBS, Fox, and the Weather Channel.
During my time in Atlanta, I honed my skills in digital broadcasting, content creation, and on-camera presentation. These roles allowed me to connect with a broader audience and contribute to the evolving landscape of news and media.
In 2021 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and then I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.
It was time for a change. I have always had a passion for creating art. From jewelry design to painting and photography, nothing was off limits.
Despite facing health issues, I leaned on the contacts I made in the media industry to market my creations. This network enabled me to create work for many wonderful people, including a notable project for Lindsay Lohan’s baby shower.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a career in 2008, during the height of the economic downturn, was challenging. However, it was also an opportunity for growth and resilience.
Despite the economic hardships, I committed myself to working hard and continually learning new skills to remain a valuable asset in the newsroom. This determination not only allowed me to survive but thrive in an unpredictable environment.
Throughout my career, I have embraced every opportunity to expand my knowledge and expertise. From mastering emerging technologies to adapting to new media trends, I have consistently proven my ability to stay ahead of the curve.
When my health took a decline I was forced to reinvent myself. At times this is still a challenge. I lean on friends and family for emotional support.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
