Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Allen
Hi Monica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Meet Monica Allen, a dynamic and inspiring entrepreneur who defied the odds and shattered stereotypes to create a life she loves. Growing up in a small town in Georgia with her single mom, grandmother and uncle, Monica lived below the poverty line and faced numerous challenges from a young age. But instead of letting her circumstances define her, Monica was determined to break the cycle and create a better future for herself.
After becoming the first in her immediate family to attend a 4-year university (University of Georgia), Monica worked in the field of insurance as an employee benefits broker for 8 years, all while earning her Masters in Business Administration from Georgia State University. However, Monica was not content to stay in Corporate America, and in 2005 she set out on her entrepreneurial journey.
Starting her first business with her boyfriend, now husband, with just $1000, today Monica is a serial entrepreneur, owning several successful businesses including Zeus’ Closet, stuff4GREEKS, and Deuce Equity Group, a commercial real estate holding company. She is also the host of a successful podcast, Become Your Own Boss. Through this podcast, Monica focuses on bringning aspiring entrepreneurs, serious side hustlers, and early-stage business owners, inspiration, business-focused topics & tips, encouragement, and a community that helps them launch, grow, and scale their businesses while also being the boss of every area of their life. Monica has even created the Become Your Own Boss planner, which helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses while still keeping other important parts of their lives in focus.
One of Monica’s greatest joys is the ability to employ other people and help make their dreams of homeownership, going to school, or providing a good education to their kids come true. She feels like entrepreneurship is in her blood and is passionate about sharing her knowledge and expertise with others.
Monica is also a founding board member of Westside Atlanta Charter School and served on their board for 11 years. Westside is one of the most diverse and successful schools in the metro Atlanta area, serving grades K-8 and recently won 2024’s Charter School of the Year
Through her own experiences, Monica believes that being surrounded by positive people, believing in yourself, and having faith in God are key ingredients to success. She has been married to her husband and business partner, Ethan King, for almost 22 years and they have 2 kids, Imana and Legend.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road. Struggles – meeting payroll (cash flow), Covid, hiring. Juggling motherhood and business ownership.

Opening in 2009, Zeus’ Closet is a premium specialty embroidery shop that creates custom-embroidered jackets with artwork to help people display their passion to the world in a unique way.
Every garment is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece made just for them.
