Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Green

Hi Devin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Originally from Akron, Ohio, I made the leap to Atlanta in 2012, a decision that has proven to be one of the best of my life. I was drawn to Atlanta, the mecca of HBCUs, to bring my concepts to life. I graduated from Hampton University in 2005, where I played collegiate basketball for four years. I was fortunate to play with the Los Angeles Lakers for a season and a preseason. After that, my journey took me through four preseasons with other NBA teams, the NBA Developmental League, and international play, totaling 15 years as a professional basketball player.

Throughout my travels and experiences, my heart was always drawn to doing something special for HBCUs, to elevate the landscape and support my community. I used my experiences with top-tier organizations to shape my passion project, the Rich Heritage Foundation and the Rich Heritage Classic (RHC). The Rich Heritage Foundation (RHF) is dedicated to helping underrepresented students and athletes interested in sports industry careers navigate this complex space through scholarships and mentorship.

The Rich Heritage Classic (RHC) was developed as a charity high school all-star game for both men and women, celebrating past, present, and future HBCU athletes. This event aims to raise funds to upgrade HBCU sports facilities while showcasing the vibrant HBCU homecoming atmosphere. I aspire to provide a nurturing space for top-tier athletes to return to HBCUs, showcase their talents, and ultimately bridge the gap to achieving their ultimate goals of becoming professional athletes. It’s disheartening to see so many African American players lacking the true option to attend HBCUs due to resource constraints.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Coming from humble beginnings, I was fortunate to have a supportive village that helped shape me into a confident individual, believing in my talent both on and off the court. This foundation enabled me to constantly strive for my dreams. However, I faced financial hardships due to a lack of financial literacy. I want to use these experiences as fuel to educate the next generation about the potential pitfalls and transform these challenges into opportunities for creating generational wealth for their families and communities.

Building the right village is crucial. Surrounding oneself with mentors, peers, and supporters who believe in your vision can make all the difference. These individuals provide guidance, encouragement, and sometimes a reality check, helping you stay grounded and focused on your goals. It’s essential to cultivate relationships with those who challenge you to grow and push you to reach your full potential.

Knowing the right time to make decisions is equally important. Timing can be everything, and understanding when to seize opportunities or when to hold back requires wisdom and insight. This often comes from experience and learning from both successes and failures. Being patient and strategic in decision-making can lead to more sustainable and impactful outcomes.

Understanding the power of education is another key element. Education goes beyond formal schooling; it’s about continuous learning and self-improvement. By equipping oneself with knowledge, whether it’s financial literacy, industry insights, or personal development, individuals can make informed decisions that pave the way for success. Education empowers individuals to break barriers and create pathways for themselves and others.

By focusing on these elements—building the right village, making timely decisions, and valuing education—we can inspire the next generation to not only dream big but also to achieve those dreams. Together, we can create a legacy of empowerment and prosperity that extends beyond ourselves, impacting our communities and future generations.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I recently completed a two-year stint as a talent evaluator in the front office with the Sacramento Kings. This experience has further solidified my belief that I am “More Than an Athlete”—a multifaceted individual with diverse talents and ambitions. My goal is to create generational wealth for my family and community through strategic planning, driven by a passion to fully embrace and enjoy the one life we have.

I am committed to bringing my dreams to life and inspiring the next generation of Black creators to not only meet but exceed their greatest expectations. I aim to be a true pioneer among thinkers and executors, demonstrating that with vision and determination, anything is possible.

In this journey, I emphasize the importance of resilience and adaptability. Life’s challenges are inevitable, but they are also opportunities for growth and innovation. By embracing change and learning from every experience, we can continuously evolve and refine our paths.

Moreover, I believe in the power of collaboration and community. By working together and supporting one another, we can amplify our impact and create a ripple effect of positive change. It’s about building networks of like-minded individuals who share a common vision of progress and empowerment.

Ultimately, my mission is to leave a lasting legacy that transcends personal achievements. I want to inspire others to dream boldly, act courageously, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. By doing so, we can pave the way for future generations to thrive and redefine what it means to be successful.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the value of failing fast and adjusting. As a professional athlete, I’ve come to understand that situations and life will inevitably happen, but these experiences are what make you stronger and more prepared for the biggest moments that God has in store for you.

Failing fast means embracing setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. It’s about recognizing that failure is not the end but a stepping stone to success. Each misstep provides valuable insights and lessons that can be used to refine strategies and approaches. By quickly acknowledging and learning from failures, you can pivot and adapt, turning what might seem like a loss into a future win.

This mindset has taught me resilience and perseverance. In the world of sports, as in life, challenges are constant. Whether it’s a missed shot, a lost game, or an unexpected life event, these moments test your resolve. However, they also build character and fortitude. Each challenge faced and overcome adds to your arsenal of experience, making you more equipped to handle whatever comes next.

Moreover, turning failures into wins involves a shift in perspective. It’s about seeing the silver lining in every situation and using it as motivation to push forward. This approach fosters a growth mindset, where continuous improvement and learning are prioritized over perfection.

Ultimately, the journey is about trusting the process and having faith that every experience, good or bad, is part of a larger plan. By embracing failures and using them as fuel, you become more aligned with your purpose and better prepared for the significant opportunities that lie ahead. This lesson has been instrumental in shaping my path and inspiring me to continue striving for greatness, both personally and professionally.
