Today we’d like to introduce you to Halem Albright
Halem, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had a huge love for music, I remember standing in front of the TV watching Music videos at about the age of 3. Around age 7, I heard The Grateful Dead & felt like a whole world opened up for me. I knew that was my kind of music… and when I heard live reggae & artists like Bob Marley, I decided right then that I wanted to do something with music.
I started figuring out my favorite guitar parts in my teen years, and had a whole lot of time to do so… so by the time I was in late high school & people heard me play, I was able to start playing shows around the southeast in bands. And when I got the songwriting bug, I knew the song ideas were not going to stop showing up & I had something that I would follow forever. So after playing in a few bands, I decided to start building my own/choosing my own musicians. I’m happy to say that The Halem Albright Band is now stronger than I could’ve imagined, making records and playing shows(with incredible musicians), that I’m extremely proud of… and we have so much more work to do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think I know anyone that follows their passion above all/without a lot of struggle and obstacles. The main thing that I had going for me when I started playing & writing, is that my expectation was pretty low…. Not for any particular reason, I just saw a music career as something far-off/that music was something I should just do with my buddies. When I would see local live musicians when I was a kid, I would think “Wow, to be able to do that all the time would be amazing”… but by late high school, I was already swept up in it. The musical ideas are something that is bigger than myself, so that is something that I will always work on and follow/no matter what.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Halem Albright Band has just released our 4th album, and will be playing plenty of shows this year & going forward. We’re an all original rock band, with plenty of experimental and improvisational moments in our shows and on our albums. I myself am mostly known for my guitar work and as a songwriter & our latest record “Blue Moon Confessions“ is the thing I’m most proud of to date. What sets us apart is our unique sound, strong songwriting, and the mix of humor/along with darker song ideas & lyrics.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
If you have someone in your life you can look up to & learn from/involving the type of work you’re doing, that is an amazing thing(and can really speed up the process of your creativity and advancement). I’ve always just followed the artists whose songwriting and playing I loved the most/and learned from example.
What has worked well for me is always being open & ready for that next idea, I’ve always followed where the music takes me/most of all. And I know it sounds a little cliché but I really do believe that if you have something you’re very passionate about…when you dive in, hold onto your vision & do the things you feel strongly about, that it can influence things beyond yourself & connections are made with others that not only benefit you/but them as well.
But looking at it from another point of view, I’ve always felt like the people that are crazy with their art are going to do it anyway/no matter what…and do their best to figure out all the other stuff along the way. As much of an uphill battle it is for musicians these days, putting the tech to good use & being able to promote yourself the way you want/is a beautiful thing.
