Life & Work with Tyla Sims of Atlanta,GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyla Sims

Hi Tyla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story began growing always getting my hair done no matter the salon or kitchen, The women in my family just don’t play about their hair! I fell in love with the transformation process and seeing how self esteem is connected. I love not only feeling but seeing people go from their hair a mess to this beautiful peace of art. As I grew older I was the family hairstylist and became the calming president of the cosmetology club in high school. It’s a passion that fueled me and that fire is still inside of me today. My parents supported me through it all from my mom allowing me to do her hair for years to my dad teaching me how to cut men’s hair at an early age on top of guiding me through cosmetology school.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m grateful for how far this journey with the hair industry has and will take me on. It’s definitely been a road far from smooth. This industry definitely requires faith, determination and extreme discipline. When I graduated, everyone had their schools they were applying for and ready to go to off to their colleges and universities. My mind was set on one of the top hair schools in Atlanta – Paul Mitchell. I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist and traditional college life wasn’t in the plan. During that time I faced many challenges from the financial loss and lack of availability being in school without being able to work a job or even do hair. Being able to live a “normal” life style became faded. I had to create my own normal and completing the program was such an accomplishment. I was so excited to be done with the program and ready put all my skills to work. The deadline to take state board arrives sooner than anticipated. I went to take the test but failed by a few points. This forced me to have the course over again since the deadline date was the day after I took the test. I was disappointed but not broken. I was determined to get it right. A few years later I enrolled into a local Atlanta cosmetology school and completed the cosmetology program with business making all of the challenges worth while.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in hair extensions including Wigs, SewIns and natural hair. Not only do I style your hair but I care for the integrity of your hair. Under the weave and wigs it’s still YOUR hair which is apart of your identity and it matters ! I’m known for melting the lace and the flattest sew ins making hair extensions undetectable as well as growing your natural hair under the protective styles. I’m most proud of how I’ve improved my craft and techniques. I am always open to challenging myself to the latest trend. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a reasonable mobile stylist. I’m willing to come to you and style your hair in the comfort of your own home. In the new culture of paying for everything I offer many service deals.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that our city is well known for hair. The capital! This is the origin of all the latest and hottest hairstyles. It’s not hard to find a stylist because everyone does hair in Atlanta. That also brings me to what I least like about our city. It’s so many stylists here that I feel at often times we aren’t valued the same, and this comes from both a stylist and customer’s perspective. For example, as a stylist I don’t charge for shampooing clients, it automatically comes with my service. I want to be sure my clients will be able to wear their style as long as possible while looking their best. I love and admire my craft so much and have faith in my products and techniques developed over the years that I rewash clients that have washed their own hair to make sure they receive the proper care and nutrients from me as their trusted hair professional.
