Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Alika Al.
Hi Kym Alika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated high school in 2013. That was also the year I became a mom. I remember having to pull myself out of postpartum depression. I felt broken, but moreover I felt chosen.
After years of emotional trauma, my daughter gave me love. She gave me a reason to not only keep going, but to follow my heart. She inspired me to think beyond the veil of working a typical 9-5.
Music is my passion. Singing and songwriting has always been one of my favorite forms of expression. In 2022 I released my first EP “Gravity,” a synthpop tale of vulnerability, surrender, and acceptance. Music gives me space to heal and hear my story from my own heart’s perspective.
Aside from music, beauty and cosmetics have too been one of my treasured remedies for transmutation. When you look good, you can’t help but feel a little better too. February 2020 I became a licensed esthetician and certified lash technician. After years of only doing makeup applications as a side hustle, I was eager to enter the field as a licensed professional. Covid-19 delayed my ambitions, but it pushed me to become more creative in my approach to conducting business. In 2023 Kym Alika Al Artistry was born.
As a traveling lash artist and esthetician I enjoy being able to perform glamours, and provide a luxury experience for my clients. Being able to relate to others through music and inspire self love is the fuel that fulfills me. My mission as an artist is to bridge the gap between mind, body, and soul through beauty and sound.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road.
Gaining and keeping loyal clients takes time and consistency, especially in competitive areas. Success depends heavily on online presence and word-of-mouth. Managing social media, reviews, and promotions can feel overwhelming. After Covid it was almost like, ‘who cares about lashes?’ But surprising, I discovered it was more the to a lash service that just cosmetic application, it’s a moment of surrender. Clients are placed in a state of stillness. It’s peaceful. It’s therapeutic. Especially during such a pandemic. Although restrictions were heavy, clients were anxious to return to their beauty rituals.
The erratic nature of music opportunities—last-minute shows, travel, studio sessions—can conflict with the structured routines a child needs. Without a reliable support system, it can be hard to attend late-night gigs, networking events, or go on tour. I had to take the backseat and ghost opportunities early on in motherhood. Now that my daughter is older I’m back on the music scene with new music on the way. My guitar and I are ready for where ever the road takes me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think of myself as an artist healer.
When I was a little girl I would play music, put on makeup, sing in the mirror, and image myself in a music video. It’s funny because I always felt so good while doing it. It made me happy. The things we love to do are the things that will heal us from within.
I guess that foreshadowed my interest in producing music and becoming a beauty enthusiast.
As a music artist I’m passionate about inspiring universal healing through sound. Music is the language that connects us all. As an esthetician I enjoy nurturing my clients and encouraging self love. I’m not chasing any specific outcome. Just here experiencing all there is to experience.
In my eyes, I don’t see separation. It’s not about what sets me apart from others, more so what brings us together. In what ways do we relate to one another. Excessively prospecting for clients and competing with other artists in either industry has never been my thing. I live for organic connection. What’s for me is for me. Just be and the rest will come.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be every time I ever spent in a nature. Wether I was fishing, swimming, frolicking with animals, or going on a simple bike ride.
The sweet outdoors surrounded by animals is my happy place.
