Daily Inspiration: Meet Shawn Wyatt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Wyatt.

Hi Shawn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started singing and writing when I was around 7 years old. I used to write stories a lot and I remember my third grade teacher telling me that I would be a writer and she was so excited about my writing that she called my mother up to the school to tell her in person that I would be a writer. Then I got a little older and by the time I got to high school I was caught up in the streets. My dad was never really around so I neglected the gifts God gave me and started selling drugs because that’s all I was around. Needless to say, I went to jail and then prison and I was in prison when I started writing songs again. My lead single Rough Life was actually written many years ago when I was in prison. In Rough Life, I sing about a time I almost lost my life in the street. I was shot in the head but the bullet didn’t penetrate my skull so it was more of a flesh wound. Glory be to God. So yeah I wrote about it in prison. All the other inmates loved it and they would make requests for me to sing it daily. So I just knew I had to record it one day. Life happened and I didn’t record it until several years later but when I did I knew I had to record a full studio album. So I did and many of the songs on my album I wrote while I was in prison because even though so many years had passed by, I never stopped dreaming. That’s why I named my album Forever Chasing A Dream because we never really stop dreaming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. For example, right before I was set to release my album one of my neighbors decided to threaten me and pull a gun out on me for no apparent reason. I ended up shooting him in self defense. I was detained but released because it was obviously self defense. They didn’t think he was going to survive and I prayed for him daily. That’s when I really felt God’s presence in my heart and in my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer, songwriter, screenwriter, and actor. I released a full R&B Album last year called Forever Chasing A Dream. It’s a really great album. I wrote every song on the album and executive produced it. I’m also a father and I’m most proud of my children.

What matters most to you? Why?
Family matters to me the most because I’m determined to leave a legacy for my children and their children.
