Community Highlights: Meet LaDonna Pinkie of Strokes mobile nail studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaDonna Pinkie.

LaDonna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in the beauty industry began in Columbus, Georgia, where I discovered my passion for nails at just 15 years old. By the time I was a junior in high school, I had mastered the craft — doing nails for classmates, faculty, and even the school secretary. I worked in several salons across Columbus, building both my skillset and client base, but by 2009, I felt a deep pull for something more.

That same year, a friend of mine called and told me about a salon in Atlanta that looked like it had jumped off the pages of a magazine. She sent me pictures, fell in love instantly, and made the move within a week. My time was up in Columbus ga. Atlanta felt like the perfect place to grow, and that salon became my home for nearly 13 years. During that time, I evolved — not just as a nail tech, but as a businesswoman and visionary.

Eventually, I felt the shift again. It was like I had entered that space as a caterpillar and was ready to fly as a butterfly. I didn’t want a traditional salon. I wanted something bold, something that hadn’t been done — something mobile, luxurious, and party-ready. That’s when Strokes Mobile Nail Studio was born. I spent years dreaming, journaling, sketching, and planning every detail. And after nearly three years of patience, hard work, and faith, my dream rolled into reality — literally.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to launching Strokes Mobile Nail Studio was anything but smooth. While the vision was clear, bringing something so unique and innovative to life came with its fair share of challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles was the actual build-out of the truck. There were builders located all over the country, but I knew I needed someone right here in Atlanta. I wanted to be hands-on — to touch it, see it come to life, and document every part of the process. That decision gave me more control, but it didn’t make things easier.

Right in the middle of it all, COVID hit. Supplies were delayed, some vendors shut down, and timelines got pushed back again and again. What was supposed to be a dream unfolding started to feel like a test of faith and patience. There were days I wondered if it would ever come together.

But every setback strengthened my commitment. I wasn’t just building a mobile nail studio — I was building a luxury experience on wheels. And despite the delays, the obstacles, and the unknowns, I stayed the course. Now, every time I see the joy this truck brings to a party or event, I know the struggle was part of the story — and it made the win that much sweeter.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

While we’re all about the party experience, we also host pop-ups from time to time — so even if you’re not planning a full event, you still might catch us in your city serving up good vibes and great nails.

What sets us apart? We bring the salon to you. No traffic, no wait time — just vibes, polish, and pampering wherever you are. We’re most proud of how we’ve blended innovation with tradition — honoring the craft while creating something completely fresh. We’re not just painting nails — we’re curating moments. Because at Strokes, it’s always a mani, pedi, party.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First and foremost, I have to give credit to my number one fan — my husband, aka Mr. Handy-Dandy Shotta. He’s been my biggest supporter from day one. No matter how many times I changed my mind or reimagined the vision, he was right there making it happen — sometimes literally building it himself. There were parts of the truck I just didn’t like, and he didn’t hesitate — he tore it out, rebuilt it, and made it better. Even the builder was like, “I might need to hire him!” He’s truly gifted with his hands — there’s nothing I haven’t seen him fix.

I also have to shout out my circle — my family, my close friends, my ride-or-dies. The ones who encouraged me when I wanted to quit, who rolled with me to every Home Depot, Lowe’s, fabric shop, and back again. They kept me afloat and reminded me why I started. This dream was built with a whole village behind it — and I’ll never forget that.
