Hidden Gems: Meet Jabari Baker of Official Travel LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jabari Baker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I originally went to college to study business marketing, but I quickly realized I wanted to challenge myself further, so I picked up a second major. During that time, I discovered the hospitality industry and developed a strong interest in event marketing.

After completing my internship, I held various roles, including working on a canvassing project for the City of Atlanta during one of the governor’s elections. That experience was pivotal—not just because of the work itself, but because I met someone who introduced me to the world of travel planning.

I got my start in the travel industry with InteleTravel, where I learned the basics of booking, client management, and supplier relations. However, after several frustrating experiences where I struggled to collect commissions on high-value bookings, I realized I needed more control and independence in my business.

That’s when I discovered CCRA and TRUE accreditation, which gave me the foundation to launch my own travel agency on June 17, 2024. Since then, I’ve partnered with local organizations like the Urban League of Greater Atlanta to expand my knowledge of procurement and contracting. Within my first year, I successfully closed my first two contracts—and now, as I approach renewal season, I’m aiming to expand my agency by building a small team of 3–5 agents.

It’s been a journey of growth, resilience, and continuous learning, and I’m excited about the direction my business is headed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I started working on my business back in January 2022, and it took nearly two years to officially establish my own travel agency. During that time, I had to figure out how to legitimize my business—from securing a professional domain, business email, and website, to getting a physical address and proper accreditation.

There was a lot of trial and error involved, especially with understanding the ins and outs of the travel industry. One of the biggest challenges was identifying my target clientele and learning how to position myself in a competitive market. I also had to remain confident in the value of my services and stay firm on pricing, which isn’t always easy—especially when selling a service versus a traditional product.

Despite the hurdles, I’ve stayed committed. Each year, we’ve grown—whether it’s in revenue, production, or professional development. Now, with the business becoming more established, I’m looking forward to building a team and continuing that upward momentum.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
While I can’t attribute all of my success to luck, I do believe Lady Luck has definitely played a role in my journey. As an entrepreneur, there are times when staying motivated and optimistic can be incredibly challenging—especially when business is slow or clients aren’t coming in as expected.

At one point, I made a commitment to stay consistent, even when things felt stagnant. I decided to market and present myself as if I were already successful, and over time, that energy started to attract real opportunities. One pivotal moment was when I took a day to register for procurement portals across different counties. Just two weeks later, I landed a contract with the DeKalb County Police Department, which resulted in a $700 profit.

That experience reminded me that while strategy and hard work are essential, sometimes success also comes down to being prepared and in the right place at the right time. Luck may not be everything—but when it shows up, you have to be ready to receive it.
