We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dejon Brooks. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Dejon, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day start with reflection and positive self-talk/affirmations. Abraham Lincoln said is he had 1 hour to cut a tree, he’d spend 55 minutes sharpening it, then 5 minutes chopping it down.
I am the same way with my day. I love spending a good 10 to 15 minutes with my paper and pen, defining my day. We all have the same 24 hours each day. So why don’t we all have the same results? Because some people are better at focusing their efforts/resources than others.
By me doing this, I’m able to take control of my day and hit my goals. As far as the affirmation portion of my morning routine, this gives me the confidence that I am capable of doing hard things.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Absolutely, my journey goes way back to being a full time YouTuber, starting trend watchers, giving a Ted talk, etc. But to answer the question in simple terms, I created trendwatchers.co in my parents basement. After about a year I moved to Provo Utah. I had no friends, family, and had to start over from scratch socially. As a way to make this new move fun while growing trend watchers, I made a goal to meet 2 new people a day. Little did I know, this goal would help me get married, meet over 2,000 people, and soon write a book about my experience and why others should pickup this goal. Outside of my professional bio, I enjoy traveling, eating good food, playing the piano and organ, people watching, and so much more. And want to know the crazy part? I’m only 24 years old.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The key part that changed the way how I see the world was setting my goal to meet 2 new people a day. Setting this simple goal changed my social life, dating life, professional life, and social skills within 30 days. When I put my friends and family in this goal, they saw similar results too. This inspired me to turn my fun goal of meeting 2 people a day into a book. The purpose of this book is to show people how setting a simple goal of meeting 2 new people a day can significantly change your life financially, socially, relationship wise, and spiritually.
You can tell someone to do something but if you can explain the WHY, that gives them the emotional motivation to actually take action. After I spend the first section of the book explaining the why, I next show you how to do it. It doesn’t matter if you live in the city, countryside, or the middle of the ocean, I have a strategy that WILL work for you. You just have to put in the work long enough to let the results compound.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Buy bitcoin. Trust me, we would all be rich if we could go back in time and hoard it. But on a serious note, I would tell my younger self to do everything that I’m doing sooner. I’ve already done a lot as a 24 year old but I’ve wasted so much time due to the fear of failing. If I could go back in time to erase anything, it would be that. Who know how much further I would be in life if I just believed in myself and went for it.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I have a lot of ambitious friends, but they all struggle with perfectionism when it comes to releasing their art. What do I mean by art? This could be their music, their startup, their musical talents, etc. They spend so much time trying to make it perfect. And by the time they do release it, I’ve already released x10 the content they have. No matter how smart you are, don’t let it get to your head. Ideas are worthless. Action is priceless.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I would love to tell people when I am gone is “I did it”. You might be confused as to what that means but it means exactly how it sounds like. I really wanted to try something new or take my life in a different direction…and I did it. Not to brag in my accomplishments here but I’ve
Been a full time YouTuber
Have a TEDx talk
Been a writer for entrepreneur
Have a tech company
Wrote x2 books
Hit Amazon best seller status
Been to 44 US states and 10 countries
All at the age of 24. I’ve barely put a dent in the world but so far, “I did it”.
And if I can chase my dreams, you can too.
