We recently had the chance to connect with Dj Tica Marilyn and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes 100%. Not because I can consider myself the best of what I do, but because of the passion and love I put to each of our events. I truly love what I do and I take the time to get to know each client and understand their vision. Every detail, every thought ,every idea becomes my mission. The remarkable attention to details and dedication is shown every time I become part of someone’s event.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marilyn ( Dj Tica ) owner of Luma Event Professionals. I am Open- Format Dj , coordinator, officiant, mom and wife. Luma Event Professionals is our family-owned business that provides Dj services, coordination services, lighting, specials effects, photo booth and more. We provide an unique experience with our elegant Dj booths and upscale lighting. We take the time to get to know each our clients to meet and exceed their expectations. Our love ,dedication and passion for what we do is what makes us different from everyone else. Each event we do we want to make it an unforgettable moment for our client. The Dj is the soul for your event so finding the right Dj is what is going to make a huge difference on the outcome of your party.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
My husband has been a Dj for over 20 years and I had always been on his side at every single event. I never had any intensions of becoming a Dj until one day I had to cover a gig for my husband for a Halloween Kids party because he was called to Dj a wedding for a client who’s Dj cancelled last minute. I knew how to use the Dj equipment and how to set it up. The experience I had seeing those kids having a blast while I was playing music it was an amazing feeling. After that, I just could not wait to do be a Dj at another event. Music is the one thing that can bring joy to anyone. Most of the events I have done, have been mixed weddings where 2 or 3 cultures are part of your dance floor. The skill to make everyone dance comes from loving what you do and understanding how to mix different types of music genres to make sure every person is included from the oldest to the youngest. In addition, every single time I speak to any client, I truly pay attention to what kind of vibe and music preferences they want and incorporate my client’s taste of music to my Dj sets along with my unique mixing style. Reading the dance floor is also the key to a fun and packed dance floor. Now been a Dj , my husband and I have a blast working together. I cant wait to see what the future hold for us.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Nothing is perfect and all you can do is try your best. Hard work will allow you to shine every time. I thrive for perfection on everything I do. Most people think a Dj only works those 5 hours during an event, but they really spend many hours preparing for each event. Both my husband and I are very detailed oriented people so we will always go the extra mile to make sure everything goes as flawless as possible.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Family time is so important for me. Even when I am working the full week and the weekend, I find time to spend with my kids. I am lucky to be able to work with my husband and have fun at all the events we do together. Our 13 year old son has become part of our team and works with us in some events. No matter how busy we may become, I will alway find time to be with my family.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes I am now. I think God put my Dj husband in my path for me to find my passion. Becoming Dj was the best decision I have ever made. We started our Dj company 15 years ago and I worked with my husband at every event as his assistant. Now I do my own events and I enjoy every second of it. However , I love when Dj Chino and I work together. There is nothing more beautiful that being part of someone’s big day and be the person that is able to create that amazing experience.
