Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Nichols.
Hi Hillary , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got my first camera in high school as a junior. I started Yearbook and lied to my parents that I needed a camera or they were going to kick me out of the class. My mom found a used Canon Rebel and she later put it together that I did not tell the truth. But I think she saw how invested I was in journalism and photography, that she couldn’t get mad. Flash foward to 2010 and one of my mom’s best friends from high school had to quickly arrange a shotgun wedding for her daughter. They asked me to be their photographer since it was just a last minute planned wedding and I was hesitant, but clearly loved photography (weddings were just so intimidating!). So I shot my first wedding on the backporch of a cabin in Dawsonville, GA and the rest was history. I’ve shot weddings for over 15 years, multiple states, and even high profile clients. Never underestimated the power of just going for it and never forget where you came from!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, I would say yes. Photography is an outlet and way of self-expression for me. I have had clients for over 15 years and I love seeing them as time passes! There are hard parts– busy seasons, doubleheaders, taxes, figuring out your own maternity leave…but the pros always outweigh the cons for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a professional photographer that’s been shooting for over 15 years. I am “retired-ish” from weddings. I don’t shoot big weddings anymore–but still find time for elopements and micro weddings. However, I have REALLY leaned into Branding the past few years and love it. It’s been so much fun connecting and finding creative freedom when trying to help someone else showcase their talent, craft, and/or business. Plus, I am honestly interested in others and really love learning about their product or service. It’s rewarding helping someone empower themselves through something that they’ve built for themselves and are proud of. There are so many talented business professionals and creatives in the area! Aside of branding, I also shoot family portraits and “personality portraits” for little kids. Personality portraits have easily become one of my favorite things to offer as kids are hilarious and are given space to be silly.
Oddly enough, I have a school counseling degree and it goes hand in hand with my photography business. I honestly believe it makes me a better creative. I connect with others easily. I believe that I have a skillset that amplifies my art. My counseling degree helps me connect and create an experience for others where they can truly see that I care very deeply. I love my families, their kids, and celebrating milestones with them. I am confident in my work, but relationships are so very important to me and I have walked hand in hand with so many clients through celebrations, but also hardship. I’m able to hold space and authentic relationships with my clients where it’s more than just a business transaction. It helps me connect and document emotion, movement, light, and joy.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I actually don’t use a client management system. I’m old school. I use my email, Google Calendar, and excel spreadsheets! I think a lot of professionals get caught up in investing in everything thrown at them. I felt pressured to use one, bought a subscription, hated it, and went back to my system. I also caved and got a mirrorless camera in 2021…hated it and sold it within 3 months. I went back to shooting on a Canon Mark IV. It’s my favorite and I can operate that camera in my sleep. Plus, you really cannot beat the colors!!!
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
