Paron Payne shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Paron , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I would say I’m wandering on a path, I truly think most of us are. Because you just never know whats around the corner, and yes we all have, or had a path set and goals to reach and in the blink of an eye everything changes for the better or worse. So I definitely have a clear path set to walk on, but often life’s makes you take a detour or 3 and you have to regroup and wander you way back to said path and journey.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Paron Jamaal Payne, I’m an music artist (Hip-Hop), and business owner. I’ve been making music professionally for 14years and I’ve owned my services company for 9years. My brand and company name is (WORK FOR IT LTD CO.) (W.F.I.) or (W.F.I. SERVICES)
We started out as a music label in 2011, and by 2016 became a services company, that specializes in Commercial cleaning, and Private security. The name “Work for it” comes from my upbringing in Philadelphia, by coming up in a blue collar city that’s all you seen, everyone getting up trying to make a way and work for what they wanted or in most cases what they needed. So the name is more of a way of life, a code to live by, and reserved for the people who do almost whatever it takes to see “it” through.
I consider us a family owned business, because each person in my immediate family has contributed in one way or another to each facet of the company, And for each person outside the family that works, networks, etc, with the company is valued and viewed has family also.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I couldn’t be successful, and just live a normal life.
Coming from the places I came up in, like Inner city Philadelphia, and southern West Virginia, you aren’t always around the most positive things or people, and if don’t have a lot of self confidence in you then it’s pretty easy to fall into the wrong things, and deal with people who don’t have your best interest at heart, or their own best interest for that matter.
So for a lot of us a positive image was normally seen on Tv, and since we knew that wasn’t reality, then what we lived in everyday had to be our reality and a harsh reality it was.
But as you get older you have a choice, to either remain in the same area and situations that you grew up in, or make a change for the better, and do it completely different than what you learned and seen. It’s not easy breaking a cycle, and it’s even harder getting other’s on board with you to change. But it’s the ultimate satisfaction to know where you came from and knowing how bad it could’ve been if you didn’t do things differently. That in it’s self is success, so anything outside of that is a bonus.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are important, and your feelings matter.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I just pay attention to what’s going on around me, and I give everything time, time tells all. So I’m never to quick to give an opinion on something at first site, and I never believe anything that’s on the surface. It’s always another layer to things, always a “reason for rhyme” So weather is a fad, or a foundational shift, just give it time and you’ll see eventually.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That I attempted any of this for money.
