We’re looking forward to introducing you to FlickupKhaf. Check out our conversation below.
Hi FlickupKhaf, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
My communication skills.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey I’m Khaf. Freelance creative director & owner of content powerhouse Genius Creative Studios. My brand specializes in crafting cinematic content that tells story and markets to audience in an authentic way. Because of the brands’ ability to adapt, our services vary. From sports to fashion to music, we encompass it all. Currently within fashion we are focusing on content for the brand Good Garment$. we are also aligned with LoudHouse Studios to create professional content for their artists and clients. Sport wise we shoot live broadcasts, highlights, and season documentaries. We are excited to show growth and our quality to the world.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I think as a black man in America you often are shown through media – sports or some form of entertainment is your pathway to success. I’ve had a liking for cameras since high school, so I don’t necessarily think I’ve been something the world bestowed on me. I will say I’ve worked places I didn’t like but felt like it was my best option at the time. In those moments I never fully lost or changed myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Everyone knows freelance work is gig to gig. I was struggling financially and was mad that I invested so much into something I felt was a dead end pursuit. I thought I set myself back for believing in a dream that brought no money. Months later I got the Claressa Shields opportunities, I was struggling financially then too but it gave me hope I could get to the level I aspired to be at.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I think especially in media/tech you’ll see changes in what’s popular daily. Between actual content, the physical gear, what’s funny, how we consume it, etc. So for me to differentiate a fad from foundation is functionality/purpose. At times it can seem like something is “hot” but when we observe its usage and it’s really not that useful, I know it’s a fad. It won’t last without the foundational purpose. Then once it has a purpose we have to see how it competes over time.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Anything that didn’t serve me.
