We recently had the chance to connect with Gretchen Norman and have shared our conversation below.
Gretchen, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Start the day with coffee and reading the news. Once, I get caught up on the world events, I’ll work out, shower and have a smoothie. Then I’ll start working.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi I’m Gretchen, the founder of P.S. Sweets. We’ve spent the last decade crafting custom sweets. You might know us for our signature decorated sugar cookies and macarons..
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I learned about hard work and sacrifice from a young age, thanks to my parents. My mom’s decision to attend college when my brother and I were little, and my dad’s long work hours to provide for us, left a lasting impression. Years later, my husband’s dedication to providing for our family allowed me to be a stay-at-home mom during our children’s early years.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve definitely had moments where I considered a different path. The burnout that comes with running a small business is no joke. But after a short break to recharge, I’m reminded why I started. Seeing the smile on a client’s face when they receive their order makes all the hard work worth it.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would definitely say it is. One thing I can’t stand are fake people. They are usually pretty easy to spot.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Seeing more of the world! I love visiting new places and trying new bakeries. I semi-joke that I work to travel.
