An Inspired Chat with Harvey Roman of Puerto Rico

We recently had the chance to connect with Harvey Roman and have shared our conversation below.

Harvey, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I’ve been finding a lot of joy in going on nature walks. It’s so liberating and refreshing to step away from the noise and really reconnect with Mother Nature. Even something as simple as touching works wonders for me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Harvey Roman, a queer multidisciplinary artist from Puerto Rico, specializing in Photography, Videography, and Creative Direction. My work is rooted in staying true to my vision, often sparked by music and the world around me. When a song resonates, I create full visual concepts inspired by it, always with my own touch. Since 2022, I’ve presented yearly photography and visual expositions, a promise I’ve proudly kept. This year, I pushed myself further with a Photography Tour. Starting in Florida and soon continuing in Atlanta. I’m now preparing for my biggest exposition yet, set for next year.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
To be honest, I didn’t really know who I was for a long time. I often felt lost and like I didn’t fit in, until I realized I didn’t have to. That’s when I started truly discovering myself, loving every part of who I am, and expanding my horizons. Today, I’m proud of the person I’ve become because I live my truth unapologetically.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times. I would ask myself, “If this isn’t working out, do you see yourself doing something different?” And every time, the answer was the same: “No. This is what I’m meant to do. It’s my purpose in life.” During my lowest lows, I realized how important it was to endure the pain and use my creative work as both an escape and a form of healing.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Integrity and honesty. I’m an open book. My closest friends also know how much my work matters to me. Self-expression is everything, and I’ve devoted my life to art.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I think I’d regret not starting earlier. For a long time, I gave too much power to outside sources, letting others dictate what I could and couldn’t do. I focused on people and things that didn’t truly matter, which left me feeling stuck and blocked. Deep down, I always knew who I was and what I wanted. I’m grateful for those lessons because they shaped me, but now I keep my head high, stay creating, focus on myself, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
