Life & Work with Jenna Wilson of Atlanta, Peachtree Corners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Wilson.

Hi Jenna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got married in 2014 to my husband, Daniel. I was a teacher and he worked in finance, but we were both just starting out so had a lot of extra time to travel together. We were gone at least once a month and decided to buy our first fancy camera. My husband watched a bunch of YouTube videos and then he would show me what to do and we would take epic pictures in all the different places we went to. And just our first year married we went to Hawaii, Thailand, New Zealand, Tokyo Italy, Australia, and a bunch of states. We would post the photos and everybody would complement us on our skills. Then I had somebody close to me have a baby and ask if I would just take some photos of the baby. The pictures came out awesome so I decided to make a photography page and post a few separate from my personal Instagram account. Soon enough, I had people asking to do family portraits, weddings, etc. my husband and I were working on these photo shoots every weekend and we realized I made about the same. If not more working part-time on Photos than I did full-time as a teacher, I kept double dipping until I got pregnant with my daughter about seven years ago And realized I wanted to be home with her and able to work as little as possible to give her all the attention I could. So in total, I have been working about nine years as a photographer, but the business has been around seven. I now have my own studio and the business keeps growing every year as clients continue to return and refer me. It’s been really awesome..

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The pandemic was definitely hard because people didn’t want you really going near them so I did front porch sessions in our town from a distance. And still, it was a weird transition when I needed to fix people‘s hair or tell them how to pose without touching them. People are still a little weary when they come into the studio so sometimes I wear a mask if that makes them feel more comfortable, but overall, that was the hardest year for the business to continue on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer. I work with mostly families, but I specialize in toddlers and kids as I am very hyper and silly and have my own children so I know what makes them smile. I also have a background in special education so I can accommodate children with special needs to have sensory issues. I’m really proud of the way. I multitask being a very present mother while still running every aspect of my business from shooting the shots pitching my mini sessions, doing my marketing answering inquiries, balancing the books, and of course editing and coming up with creative sets. I would say my turnaround speed is what impresses people the most.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would say my husband is my IT guy. That’s what we joke around and call him because anytime I mess something up in my editing platform or my booking platform. He can figure it out in
point two seconds. He also helps me stay on the up and up with the latest and greatest marketing platforms.
My kids have also taught me how quick I need to go and what kids are actually interested in going to respond to to get the best smiles during a session. I used to try all these complicated poses and outfit changes and it’s just not about that parents just care about a really great smile.

Pricing:

  • I am one of the most affordable family photographers in my area, and that is simply because I charge what I would pay for family photos..
  • A standard shoot starts at 400
  • Newborns are more complicated. They are around 500.
  • I also do micro weddings, and they are incredibly affordable
