Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Elena Padilla.
Hi Maria Elena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
María Elena Padilla is a distinguished Colombian economist with a passion for art and inclusion. As the mother of talented blind artist Step Padilla Art, María Elena has been a key figure in her daughter’s career development and promotion.
In addition to being Step Padilla Art’s manager, María Elena serves as CEO of the Step Art Org Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to discovering and empowering talents in people with disabilities. Through her foundation, María Elena works tirelessly to create opportunities and provide support to those who need a chance to shine.
With her dedication and effort, María Elena has successfully positioned Step Padilla Art as a prominent artist on the national and international scene, demonstrating that disability is not a limit to achieving dreams and goals. Her commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities is an inspiring example for many.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a mother of a daughter with 14 challenging health conditions, I’ve faced challenges I never thought I’d face. But instead of letting adversity define me, I’ve chosen to strengthen my mind with faith in God and therapies that help me tackle each obstacle.
The 11 surgeries and long recovery periods have been tough, but they’ve been worth it. My daughter is an incredible human being with limitless potential, and I’m determined to help her reach her goals and dreams.
Raising my daughter has been a journey of growth and learning for both of us. Together, we’ve faced challenges and come out stronger. And now, we want to share our story with the world, to inspire others to find strength and hope in the midst of adversity.
I want to show the world that with faith, love, and determination, we can overcome any obstacle. My daughter is my source of inspiration, and I’m grateful to be her mom. Let’s do this!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in commercial management and leadership, having worked for a public services company in Barranquilla, Colombia, where I led teams of over 200 people and developed strong community engagement skills.
However, my true passion lies in serving vulnerable and marginalized communities. I’ve dedicated myself to working with Christian church ministries and immigrant groups, where I’ve found a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
But what I’m most proud of is being a mother to a daughter with disabilities and working tirelessly to ensure she has the opportunities she deserves. My life’s project is to transform society and promote inclusion, because I believe no community should be left behind.
My passion for helping others and my commitment to inclusion set me apart. I work 24/7 without expecting anything in return, because I believe everyone deserves a chance to shine. My experience and skills enable me to make a real difference in the lives of the people and communities I serve.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I grew up in Barranquilla, the most cosmopolitan city in Colombia, surrounded by love and affection. As an only child, I was loved and pampered by my parents, siblings, and aunts, but also by neighbors and school friends. Music and dance were an integral part of my childhood, and I cherish those moments with great joy.
My education began at a Catholic school, where I completed my primary education, and continued at a religious school for my secondary education. In that environment, I developed a strong connection with my faith and a desire to serve others. In fact, my dream was to become a missionary nun when I grew up. Although it didn’t happen, I believe that restlessness and desire to serve have been a constant in my life.
Faith and family have been my fundamental pillars. My childhood was a time of discovery and growth, filled with happy moments and memories that I treasure. Music, dance, and faith have been part of my life since then, and have shaped the person I am today.
