We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rob Gomes. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Rob, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Ironically, move back to Los Angeles during one of the TV/Film industry’s scariest times.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
For the last 10+ years I was primarily known for producing non-scripted dating/competition shows (Farmer Wants A Wife, Married At First Sight, 90 Day Fiance), where I worked as a Supervising Producer. I’ve recently launched a YouTube channel, {https://www.youtube.com/@RealLoveRob}, where I give real people dating advice based on successful techniques I’ve learned from working in reality TV…. to my surprise, the channel is seeing success literally around the world.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I’m Cape Verdean/American…family and our community loved me, raised me and helped to shape me. I was blessed with remarkable parents and awe-inspiring Grandparents. To this day, my brother, sisters and cousins bring out the best of me and lift my spirits when I’m low….I do my best to raise my 3 sons with the same love and devotion that my family and community has given me.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
In Hollywood we are taught to develop relationships, in the hopes those relationships will create avenues to employment. Over the years, I’ve changed my mind about leaning on those relationships – they often didn’t lead to jobs. My pivot, is to be remarkable at the work I’m doing and let God, my passion and creativity lead to new open doors.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I’d have to point back to Cape Verde, there are more Cape Verdeans living in Portugal, France, Amsterdam, and. America than those actually living in the ten islands that make up Cape Verde. However, when meeting another Cape Verdean, who might be a total stranger – we instantly give them the love and friendship you’d give to a family member….this is a cultural value everyone should strive for.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I generally do that now. With every job I take, I put my heart and soul into it – I don’t know any other way. I’m taking the same approach with my YouTube channel.
