We recently had the chance to connect with Kevin Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is paramount because it provides your moral compass that guides both intelligence and energy. Without strong principles your other qualities can be used for negative purposes.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kevin Williams the founder of Afinom Games and Entertainment. My company is family business and it’s named for my wife Monifa (spelled backwards) who along with our children, were instrumental in helping me create our games. It’s pronounced “a phenom” (a ˈfē-ˌnäm), which is short for phenomenal.
Our goal with our party games, is to bring friends and families together to create lasting memories while having fun.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my greatest memories of experiencing power was the first time I performed on a concert stage. In my younger days I was a member of a rap group called Triple Crush. We had some success in the Atlanta rap scene back in the day and worked our way up to open for some of the biggest names in Hip Hop at that time.
The first time that I actually rapped in front of a crowd and actually saw and heard people rapping along with us, was a feeling that I will never forget. It spurred my love for music to heights like never before. That love is a big part of why I’ve created music based games.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Continue to trust your gut, and make sure to surround yourself with positive people.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My children. They are from a entirely different generation from me and are experiencing the world much differently, as well. Since our games are designed to be played by various age ranges, I have to lean on their thoughts and opinions to make the gameplay as appealing as possible to everyone.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, I could because I control my own self-worth. Satisfaction is the real reward and lasts longer than the opinions of others.
