Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Eddie Hackler III.
Hi Dr. Eddie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Eddie Hackler III is a board certified cardiologist and author currently practicing in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his cardiology fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, building upon a robust foundation in internal medicine earned at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. His journey in medicine began at Meharry Medical College, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree.
As one of the few Black cardiologists in the United States, Dr. Hackler represents a vital and rare presence within the cardiovascular field, standing as a symbol of excellence and representation within the 3% of Black cardiologists.
Dr. Hackler’s natural leadership and passion for advocacy have been evident throughout his career. While in medical school, he held several significant positions, including Mr. Meharry, Student Body President, and a seat on the Board of Trustees at Meharry Medical College. He also earned a certificate in Health Policy from the esteemed Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
During his residency, Dr. Hackler was selected for a prestigious global health elective, where he served as a physician in a major hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. His dedication to addressing health disparities is further demonstrated by his published research on racial inequities in cardiovascular diseases, and he has been featured in numerous articles, podcasts, and speaking engagements across the country.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Hackler is a prominent social media influencer, using his platform to share essential health information and empower his community with preventative strategies and cardiovascular education. His efforts not only inform but also inspire proactive health management, driving meaningful improvements in public health outcomes. He has published an e-book and audiobook entitled Follow Your Heart, an inspirational guide that encourages achieving goals.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Hackler enjoys quality time with family and friends, traveling, staying active, reading, exploring new restaurants, and continually learning new hobbies.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first day of residency felt surreal. I had worked tirelessly to get to this moment, yet as I stepped into the hospital as an intern, a deep sense of doubt crept in. I had matched into one of the top programs in the nation for my specialty, an incredible achievement. Instead of feeling proud, however I felt exposed. Everywhere I looked, I was surrounded by some of the smartest, most accomplished individuals I had ever met. My co-residents rattled off complex medical knowledge effortlessly, confidently presented cases to attending physicians, and moved through the hospital with a certainty I didn’t feel I had. I found myself questioning everything; Did I belong here? Had they made a mistake choosing me? Was I as capable as everyone else? That doubt chipped away at my confidence. I second-guessed my decisions, hesitated before speaking up, and carried a silent fear that at any moment, someone would figure out that I wasn’t as good as the rest. It was imposter syndrome at its worst. Crippling, isolating, and completely irrational.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a board-certified cardiologist who prevents, diagnoses, and treats heart disease. I am dedicated to making heart health clear, accessible, and actionable for everyday people. My work brings together clinical expertise, community education, digital media, and storytelling to help people understand their hearts and learn how to protect them.
Through my daily clinical practice and my social media platform, I help people identify risks early and make lifestyle changes that truly last. I take complex medical information, including ECGs, heart disease pathways, and treatment options, and break it down in plain language that people can apply to their lives. I also create engaging and trustworthy health content for TV, social media, YouTube, and my upcoming podcast.
I am known for translating medicine into real conversations and for being a credible voice in a world filled with medical misinformation.
I am most proud of my commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. Through outreach in underserved communities, I work to close gaps in knowledge, access, and outcomes. My content often reaches people who may never have the chance to see a cardiologist in person.
What sets me apart is the modern physician-educator-influencer model I am building. I show up in places where traditional medicine often does not, and I merge clinical excellence with storytelling to meet people where they are, both in the community and online.
How do you think about happiness?
My happiness comes from the places where meaning and connection meet. I draw strength from the love of my family and friends and from the quiet peace of slow mornings that allow me to center myself before a demanding day. Traveling and experiencing new cultures broaden my perspective and remind me of the beauty and diversity of the world. I am happiest when I am adding value to the lives of others. Knowing that my presence or work can uplift someone else gives me a deep sense of fulfillment.
