Today we’d like to introduce you to Chioma.
Hi Chioma, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Chioma Narcisse-Williams and I’m an 11 year old professional percussionist. My journey as a drummer has been an incredible adventure, filled with passion, hard work, and the support of my community.
I am blessed to be in a family that celebrated creativity. Music is always around me, but it was a family gathering that truly sparked my love for drumming. I watched my community play the drums, and I was instantly captivated by the rhythm.
I started my drumming journey by using whatever I could find—pots, buckets, you name it. I would spend hours at home, banging away and experimenting with different beats. One year for Christmas, my grandmother bought be my first djembe, a West African hand drum. At that moment, I knew I wanted to be a drummer.
Eventually, I joined the Atlanta Drum Academy, an Atlanta based percussion group, known for nurturing young talent. This was a game changer for me. The instructor and founder, James Riles III, introduced me to snare drumming, and I learned so much about technique and rhythm.
At ADA, I immersed myself in my lessons, diving into basic to complex rudiments and cadences. I was also inspired by drumming legends like Sheila E., Questlove, and Ralph Nader. Watching their performances encouraged me to push my boundaries and incorporate their energy into my own style.
I started performing with Atlanta Drum Academy at local venues and major events, and it felt amazing to share my passion with others. Then came the moment that changed everything: I auditioned for *America’s Got Talent*. Standing on that stage, I poured my heart into my performance, and it felt like magic. The best part was that I had my bandmates of Atlanta Drum Academy right there on stage with me. I felt limitless! The judges were captivated, and we advanced in the competition, which opened many doors for me.
After my appearance on the show, I gained a following that I never expected. I began collaborating with various drummers, bands, and recording artists. I realized the importance of connecting with my audience, so I turned to social media to share my journey. I posted videos, tutorials, and live performances, and I loved engaging with aspiring musicians.
Beyond performing, I found a passion for empowering young musicians. I enjoy inspiring new drummers of the Atlanta Drum Academy, where I encourage students to follow their dreams, just as I did. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their enthusiasm and potential.
I actively participate in community initiatives, providing resources and opportunities for aspiring drummers. I believe that music education can change lives, and I’m committed to making a difference.
My journey from that curious boy inspired by rhythms to a professional drummer and mentor has been nothing short of extraordinary. I hope my story inspires others to chase their dreams and embrace their passions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles that come along with me drumming at a young age is finding true friends that are invested in me for me and not for what I’m able to do on the drums. Sometimes people are either intimidated by my drumming skills and stay away or are only interested in my talent and show little interest in getting to know me beyond drumming. I’m grateful to have a tight circle of friends that love and appreciate me for me. That means that world to me!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I’m most proud of is the ability to experience a craft that I love at a young age. I don’t have to say, “When I grow up, I want to be…” I manifest my dreams everyday! I enjoy life as it comes and through creativity and discipline, doors open around me right now!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that many people may not know about me is that I’m a homebody. I love being in my own space at home. I am just as comfortable relaxing and making beats at home as I am on stage in front of thousands of people.
