We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shay Bayer. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Shay, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I am chasing connection with like minded people. I am very into health and fitness, plants and flowers/gardening, and hair will always be my first obsession. I’m trying to find my people who obsess over the same things and can talk about these three topics. The more people I find, the bigger the web gets and it’s pretty cool! If I stopped chasing it, Id probably stop feeling happy. I love talking with clients about their plants or what they are working on in the garden, which was why i decided to rebrand my business to not just a hair salon, but a plant/flower shop as well.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi my name is Shay and I am here to introduce Rooted by Shay. A healthy hair salon that doubles as a plant and flower shop. I grow my own flowers and sell bouquets in my suite along with rare house plants. I decided to shift my business about a year ago when I started to struggle with my own hair and felt let down by the hair industry and the products that are on the shelves. I have MANY clients whose hair is suffering with thinning, shedding and just not optimal health. So i decided to dive into the “internal health” aspect of healthy hair, to not only help myself on this journey but to also help guide my clients into better information when it comes to getting our hair in a better place. Being able to recommend cleaner products that focus on scalp health and being able to talk about the internal health side of things have helped tremendously for a lot of my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband… hes my best friend. We have been together for 15 ish years and he always has more faith in me than I have in myself. When i decided to give it a full go on selling flowers and plants on top of my hair business, I had his full support as always. He’s my muscle, literally. Always helping me build garden beds and moving mulch. He supports me more than I support myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, I have been doing hair for almost 12 years and theres been a few times along the way. Its a tough industry but my love for my clients is what keeps me going. I have built a wonderful clientele full of like minded people and Ive seen many of them for that full 12 years. So I’ve seen relationships turn into marriages, and from marriages to babies etc. I’ve seen all the bad life stuff too. I share a great bond with my clients and lots of them I call friends.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
When it comes to social media and doing things for it, yes the public version of me is me. I dont do the aesthetic/influencer type of business posts. I have a son thats 7, my husband travels a lot, and I work part time behind the chair. My life can be a little chaotic and i dont cover that up. I am always in the garden working on something in the dirt and thats who I show. My hair has been struggling for years because I have autoimmune conditions and I talk about that constantly. I’m very transparent about who I am. Life is messy and fun and chaotic and we should all show our true selves, messy or not.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop worrying if Im doing everything “right “. I feel like I am constantly saying “if I get to this point, I will feel successful “ when in reality, I am already successful in many ways. But the goal post is always constantly shifting. If I had ten years left Id remove the goal post completely and just enjoy the journey that is life. Which is where the happiness should come from.
