Hi Mpumi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

Growing up in South Africa, I was always known as a creative person. I loved working with my hands and truly enjoyed creating. I come from two families that ate artistic and creative in many ways, so creativity has always been a part of who I am.
When I moved to America, my creativity grew even more. Through watching YouTube videos and exploring things I was interested in, I taught myself how to braid hair. That skill became my very first business. As time went on, I learned how to make chocolate-covered strawberries, and that was when Umiecreations was born in 2020, right before COVID.
Around that time, I found a remote job that I hoped would allow me to stay home with my son, but it didn’t work out as planned. I also wanted something that gave me a true sense of ownership. I’ve always loved making people happy, and Umiecreations does exactly that. I loved every moment of learning, creating, and growing.
Over the years, I expanded my skills to include balloon garlands, event décor, flower arrangements, and so much more. From 2020 to today, I still love what I do, and I am incredibly proud of how Umiecreations has grown. I’ve met amazing people who have become friends, and I’ve had the honor of creating for celebrities like Kash Doll, Davido, and his wife Chioma.
I am in awe of God’s grace throughout this journey. I know there are even greater things ahead, and I’m excited to see where Umiecreations goes next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many creative and entrepreneurial journeys, there have been real challenges along the way. Starting Umiecreations during a time of uncertainty, especially around COVID, came with financial instability and fear of the unknown. Balancing motherhood, especially while wanting to be fully present for my son, made time management and consistency difficult at times.
There were moments of self-doubt, wondering if my work was good enough, if people would support my brand, or if I should pursue something more “stable.” Learning everything on my own through trial and error meant making mistakes, losing money on supplies, underpricing my work in the beginning, and experiencing burnout. There were also challenges in building visibility, gaining trust, and competing in a crowded creative space.
However, every struggle became a lesson. Each setback pushed me to grow, refine my skills, strengthen my faith, and become more confident in my purpose. Those challenges shaped Umiecreations into what it is today and made every milestone even more meaningful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the founder and creative director of Umiecreations, a creative brand built around turning moments into meaningful experiences. I specialize in custom event décor and luxury treats, including balloon garlands, full event styling, flower arrangements, chocolate-covered strawberries, and personalized gift setups. My work is centered on celebrations, birthdays, baby showers, weddings, proposals, corporate events, and intimate gatherings, each designed to feel thoughtful, elegant, and personal.
Umiecreations is known for its attention to detail, clean and classy aesthetic, and heartfelt execution. I don’t just create décor or treats; I create experiences that make people feel seen, celebrated, and valued. I’m especially known for my ability to take a simple idea and elevate it into something memorable, whether it’s through color harmony, texture, or the emotional tone of the event.
What I am most proud of is the growth and resilience of Umiecreations. From being self-taught through YouTube to building a brand that has served countless families, businesses, and even celebrities like Kash Doll, Davido, and Chioma, every milestone represents persistence, faith, and passion. I’m proud that my work has created joy, lasting memories, and genuine connections with clients who often become friends.
What truly sets me apart is my heart behind the work. I create with purpose, love, and intention, not just for profit. My background, my journey as a mother, and my faith influence how I show up in my business. Every project is treated as if it were for my own family, and that level of care, creativity, and authenticity is what makes Umiecreations stand out
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
This journey has definitely not been one I’ve walked alone. First and foremost, God deserves all the credit. His grace, guidance, and favor have sustained me through seasons of uncertainty, growth, and breakthrough. Without Him, Umiecreations would not be where it is today.
My family also deserves immense credit. Growing up in a creative and artistic household laid the foundation for who I am today. Their constant encouragement, belief in my talent, and emotional support, especially during moments of doubt,gave me the confidence to keep going.
My clients have played a huge role in the success of Umiecreations. Many took a chance on me in the early days, trusted my vision, and became repeat customers. Some even turned into friends, cheerleaders, and advocates who recommended my work, shared my business, and celebrated my growth as if it were their own. Their trust and support have been invaluable.
I’ve also learned so much from online creators and mentors through platforms like YouTube and social media. Even without direct access, their willingness to share knowledge, techniques, and encouragement helped me develop my skills and build my business from the ground up.
Lastly, I credit the community around Umiecreations, supporters, collaborators, and fellow creatives, who have pushed me forward through words of encouragement, referrals, and collaboration.
