Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Johnson.
Hi Angelique , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a professional braider began at the age of eleven. As the oldest of five, my mom didn’t always have the flexibility to style everyone’s hair every day, so she started teaching me how to do my own hair for school. Over time, that turned into a real passion. As I got older, I became more interested in trying different styles and keeping up with hair trends. With the help of YouTube and practicing on my younger sister, I slowly perfected my skills.
Braiding, in particular, is something I feel I naturally inherited. My mom was also a braider, and she would always experiment with different styles on my sister and I, which inspired me even more. As a preteen, I began doing hair for kids in my neighborhood and at my church. I started with children, but eventually their parents began to trust me with their hair as well, which helped me build my confidence and my portfolio.
I later took my talent with me to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where I continued styling classmates, friends, and other students. I used social media, especially Instagram, along with my growing portfolio to attract more clients and expand my reach.
After graduating in 2018, my Instagram caught the attention of a well-known Atlanta stylist, who gave me the opportunity to work in her salon. After about six months of gaining experience, I decided to step out on my own. Since then, I’ve been working independently as a professional braider in Atlanta, continuing to grow my brand and serve my clients with passion and purpose.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it has been a relatively smooth journey so far. I’m approaching six years as a professional braider in Atlanta, and I’m grateful for the growth I’ve experienced. One of the main challenges I’ve faced, however, has been navigating social media. Understanding the algorithm and consistently keeping up with ever-changing trends in the industry hasn’t always been easy for me.
Believe it or not, mastering how to effectively use social media to market my work has been my biggest struggle. But over time, I’ve learned to adapt, stay consistent, and continue evolving with the digital side of the beauty industry.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
If you were to ask my supporters and loved ones they would inform you that I am a braider and/or hairstylist. However, I am more than a hairstylist. In many ways, I serve as a listening ear, a source of encouragement, and at times even a sister to my clients. What I provide goes beyond styling hair—I take pride in contributing to my clients’ happiness, enhancing their natural beauty, and helping build their confidence.
Throughout my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some truly amazing and inspiring individuals, and I’ve built genuine relationships with many of my clients. For me, this work is not just about hair—it’s about connection, trust, and creating a space where people feel seen, valued, and uplifted.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of the most impactful resources in my life is the Bible. I am an avid Bible reader, and incorporating it into my morning routine helps ground me and mentally and spiritually prepare for the day ahead. It gives me clarity, discipline, and a sense of purpose that carries into both my personal life and my work.
In addition, music plays a big role in maintaining my focus and energy. I often listen to jazz and lofi music, which helps me stay calm, centered, and productive throughout the day.
