Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Vanderham.
Hi Andrea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Andrea, and I grew up on a farm in Alabama, where hard work wasn’t a choice — it was a way of life. Even then, I was strong-minded and fiercely independent, qualities that would later define me as an entrepreneur. Sixteen years ago, I opened Human Canvas Barbershop with little more than determination, vision, and a willingness to sacrifice whatever it took to make it succeed.
Today, after celebrating sixteen years in business, I can finally pause and appreciate what those sacrifices built. The shop is rock solid and it stands as proof of long hours, missed lunch breaks, and unwavering belief. I’m still on my feet behind the chair for at least ten hours a day, but the work has never felt more rewarding.
At twenty, I left Alabama and moved to Atlanta in search of greater opportunity. I put myself through college at Georgia State University, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in Clinical Psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by human behavior, and in many ways, barbering is an intimate study of it. Yes, haircuts happen — but so do confessions, breakthroughs, laughter, and the quiet processing of life’s chaos. A barber’s chair can become a front-row seat to someone’s journey.
Over the years, I’ve built relationships that extend far beyond the mirror. I’ve listened to stories from war veterans, entrepreneurs who built multimillion-dollar empires from nothing, and individuals whose personal histories could fill books. One client once shared stories of interviewing George Harrison in his London home. Another told me a story one afternoon that appeared on World News the very next day. In this chair, I’ve witnessed resilience, reinvention, heartbreak, ambition, and triumph.
There is something extraordinary about working so closely with people over time — watching chapters unfold, seeing growth, celebrating wins, and sometimes simply holding space during loss. Human Canvas Barbershop has never just been about grooming; it has been about connection.
Sixteen years later, I am proud, humbled, and deeply grateful. I took a dream and built it into something that still amazes me every day. Every conversation. Every interaction. Every person who walks through the door adds another brushstroke to the canvas.
I made it. We made it. And the masterpiece is still unfolding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business is never easy. It is blood, sweat, and tears — and then more of the same. It’s waking up every day and choosing to climb toward success, even when the summit feels impossible to see. It’s staying focused when distractions tempt you, putting in the labor when no one is watching, and giving everything you have — even on the days when you feel empty.
For me, the most challenging season came when I was building my business while also a full-time student at Georgia State University. Balancing exams and entrepreneurship required a level of discipline I didn’t know I possessed. My days were long, my nights longer. There were moments of exhaustion and doubt. But there was also vision — and vision has a way of carrying you through when energy runs low.
Looking back, I’m proud not only that I earned a degree, but that I built a thriving trade alongside it. Having both an education and a skilled craft has been empowering. One sharpened my understanding of people; the other gave me the tangible ability to serve them, provide for myself, and create something lasting.
To young entrepreneurs charting their own path, I offer this: never underestimate the power of a trade. In a world that often glorifies corner offices and corporate titles, skilled trades remain one of the most powerful and reliable avenues to independence and success. If you are hardworking, organized, determined, and resilient, you can take a trade and transform it into a flourishing business.
I am incredibly grateful to have a skill in my hands — something practical, timeless, and always in demand. A trade is more than a job; it’s leverage. It’s freedom. And when paired with discipline and vision, it can build a life you’re proud of.
We’ve been impressed with Human Canvas Men’s Barbershop, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, we are a traditional barbershop — rooted in craftsmanship, ritual, and an unmistakable old-school, vintage vibe. From the moment you walk through the door, the pace slows and the atmosphere shifts. This isn’t a rushed appointment squeezed into your day; it’s time set aside.
Our services honor the classics: precision cuts, old-fashioned hot towel shaves, and meticulous beard grooming delivered with care and attention to detail. Every service is performed with the kind of skill and intention that reflects the heritage of true barbering — where technique matters and presentation is everything.
But what truly sets us apart is the experience woven into the details. We curate a selection of rare bourbons, and every client is offered a small pour as a complimentary gift with their haircut. It’s our nod to tradition — a subtle luxury that transforms a routine grooming appointment into something memorable.
Beyond the services and the spirits, we take the greatest pride in the atmosphere we’ve created. It’s a space designed to relax, unwind, and connect. Conversations unfold naturally. The outside world quiets. Clients leave not only looking sharp, but feeling restored.
Our mission is simple: to send you out looking top notch — and feeling even better than that. Because here, it’s not just a haircut. It’s an experience on another level.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to us is simple: our clients’ happiness. Everything we do begins and ends with that principle. We have always believed our work is about more than appearance — it’s about how someone feels when they walk out the door. Looking your best is important. Feeling your best is transformative.
At our core, we don’t just sell haircuts — we sell experiences. That philosophy is what truly sets us apart. From the moment a client walks in, every detail is intentional: the atmosphere, the service, the conversation, the care. It’s about creating a space where people feel valued, seen, and taken care of.
Because the truth is, without our clients, we are nothing. Their trust is our foundation. Their loyalty is our greatest achievement. Every appointment is an opportunity to exceed expectations, to offer consistency and craftsmanship, and to ensure that each person leaves sharper, lighter, and more confident than when they arrived.
Their experience isn’t just a priority. It’s our purpose.
