Daily Inspiration: Meet Sonya Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Jordan.

Hi Sonya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been teaching Yoga in Monticello, GA since 2013. I opened my studio in 2018 and teach regular classes twice a week. I also work with private clients, lead workshops, teacher trainings and retreats. I organize a variety of events for my community, including art classes, meditation workshops, and fundraisers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Beginning to teach Yoga in this small, rural, conservative town was a big step. I was the only Yoga teacher in town, and all of my students were brand new to Yoga. I have continued to travel in order to attend continuing education and to work in a variety of yoga events over the years. The students who study with me have been so supportive and appreciative of what I bring to the community. Quitting my other job as an elementary school art teacher and opening my own studio was scary. It’s been great overall, but growth is always challenging.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have explored a wide variety of trainings and modalities to serve the population that I work with here in Monticello. Most of the students I work with are retired, and they have a lot of aches and pains that come with aging. I love working with people who are looking for ways to feel better in their body, and to get healthier. My studio is welcoming to everyone, and the focus is not on learning fancy poses in cute outfits, but rather on learning how to take good care of yourself. I want to empower others to take charge of their health and develop good body awareness.
My specialty is working with people who have some aches and pains. I work with back pain, joint pain, shoulder injuries, knee and hip replacements, and all types of arthritis complaints. I’ve done extensive study and practice with Restorative Yoga and have found it to be transformative when working with pain. I have a gentle approach and do my best to help everyone feel safe and supported in each class.
I also love working with beginners. The progress I see when people start coming to class regularly or commit to private lessons is amazing. I’m patient, experienced, and always curious to learn more. I continue to study and work with other teachers and leaders to challenge myself, learn and grow.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I don’t live in Atlanta. I live and work in a small town 1 hour south of the city. I do visit midtown frequently and hope to begin teaching there occasionally in the next few years.
I also teach at a studio in Covington, GA called Moxie.
I lead retreats both locally and internationally.
I write and lead a variety of workshops and continuing education for other students and teachers.
I train future Yoga teachers through Yogafit Worldwide.
I’m certified with Judith Hanson Lasater as a Relax and Renew level 2 Restorative Yoga teacher and work as her assistant regularly.
I’m registered with Yoga alliance as eRYT500 and YACEP

I’m sure this is an incomplete story, but not certain what else to say?
