Conversations with Cory Butler Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Butler Jr..

Hi Cory, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a performing artist (Blessed B33ZY) since 2019. Growing up surrounded by music and playing the piano in my younger years, music came naturally to me. In 2023, I made my debut as a DJ at a major event—a wedding. Months before the wedding, I started practicing by going live on TikTok, which helped me gain followers and fans. People began to rave about my DJ style and music.

Inspired by the positive feedback, I reached out to B3 (Khalil Blount) about DJing at Friends on the Hill. From the moment I stepped in, it was an amazing experience. Since then, I’ve received numerous referrals and bookings, including gigs at major venues in Macon like The Historic Douglass Theatre and JBA.

Recently, I’ve expanded my offerings at Friends on the Hill by hosting karaoke, performing, and organizing themed parties. In addition to my performing career, I recently graduated with my Associates in Music Production from The Los Angeles Film School in 2024. I’m currently pursuing my Bachelors in Music Production, with an expected graduation date of June.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Working alongside other artists has been a mixed bag. I’ve had a few instances where I was asked to feature on a song, and I was so eager to collaborate that I agreed without any compensation. Unfortunately, I’ve ended up with about 4 to 5 verses or songs that I contributed to, but they weren’t used or I was informed that another artist was chosen instead.

Additionally, I’ve traveled out of town to perform at events, only to find that I had to pay out of pocket to get on the list of performers. The events were incredibly unorganized, and I never got to perform or received a refund.

While these experiences were hurtful, they also served as a motivating factor. They pushed me to take my art more seriously and ensure that no one would ever underestimate or discredit my talents again. These challenging times not only helped me persevere through school but also fueled my practice, hard work, and the creation of a greater demand and respect for my craft.

Ultimately, these struggles are what shape the journey of an artist.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a DJ, artist, producer, and content creator in the music industry. I’m proud to have won a rap challenge with the brand AXE, collaborating with Lil Baby. As a result, I received a special care package filled with specialized AXE items.

I also participated in another rap challenge with the artist Gifted Hands. I emerged victorious and was invited to fly out to Virginia to be featured on a TV show called Poolside Cooking. The show showcased artists and their accomplishments.

I was also booked to DJ a private party where the renowned artist West Love was performing. Although I was only playing her music, it was an immense honor to have the opportunity to DJ for a prominent artist in our region.

I believe my unique style sets me apart. I can perform in various genres, create most of my own music, and have a strong musical education. My music appeals to a wide audience and still maintains a high quality.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Never give up on yourself. Only you can write your story. Don’t let age, people’s opinions, or your own doubt stop you. YOU GOT THIS
