Today we’d like to introduce you to YJ Adam.
Hi YJ, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got into acting just by chance. I got really lucky in terms of building connections early on thanks to an interest I had, and still have to this day, which is being a fan of a group of artists called BTS.
I was a fan of them since the tail end of 2014, but there’s something that is contagious when it comes to seeing ordinary people achieve unexpected levels of greatness and success. It inspired me to give acting a shot because it was something that seemed so far away and out of the ordinary, but it also felt challenging in a healthy way, as well as attainable.
At the time, I was creating content on a YouTube channel that I owned that surpassed 1 million subscribers. At the very least, I expected that taking acting classes would help me build upon skills that I would need in order to create the high levels of content that I wanted to at that point in time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hell no. Even now, I don’t know if I’m achieving any measurable amounts of success. I know I’ve visibly improved with regards to my talent and acting capabilities, but talent pales in comparison to having strong connections with the right individuals in the industry. You have to be multi faceted in this fast paced world and create your own opportunities.
I booked my first on screen speaking role this year actually whole temporarily staying in Los Angeles on “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis,” and the whole gig was an opportunity I came across somewhat accidentally and randomly. It wasn’t intentional, but it worked out very well.
I’m working on a pilot endeavor of my own these days. I hope to bring it to life very soon, despite the setbacks.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily would want to focus on acting and further my career in that area, but for now, I’m also screenwriting and producing my own endeavors. It is what I have to do to create opportunities for myself these days, especially since I haven’t seen any uptick in my number of auditions post-strike.
I think what sets me apart is my commitment to my craft, but also my approach. I don’t limit myself to anything. I also try my best to get inspiration just from living life these days. I’m not actively training much these days due to financial constraints, but I try my best to take inspiration from shows and films I happen to be enjoying at different points in time.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Honestly, I’m not successful in any regard. There’s no right way to do things. You make mistakes, but through those mistakes comes character building and moments for learning and redirection.
Make sure you are financially sufficient. Work that boring 9 to 5 for a lil bit, then take like 5 to 6 months off. Have a daily routine so you stay structured.
Always get out of your comfort zone. Put yourself in environments that challenge you. Take breaks. Live life.
All this shit I’m saying, I probably stole from somebody else.
