Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gibbs.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My insurance journey began about 17-18 years ago when I was transitioning from the wonderful world of accounting whereby my experienced evolved within industries like import/export company, telecommunications, and financial services. I always felt that I didn’t have an employee’s mentality and was drawn to entrepreneurship while working for these companies. In addition to my evolving entrepreneurial desires, my work experience was interesting in that I experience 2 different lay-off. My first experience was because I was hired “unknowingly” to fill a temporary role and it was a week before my wedding and then a year later because this business closed. I wasn’t experiencing longevity like my parents did. With these challenges, I understood post college that I would gain valuable business experience working corporately however I knew that I would venture off, at some point! I began my entrepreneurship journey while employed actually starting my first business through ownership of a tax franchise (Liberty Tax). Acquired that business through a program they offered for 4 years. At the time and before I sold it back, we peeked by doubling the amount of tax returns issued within the 4-year period. I still was working as an employee within the accounting department however within a 1 from the sell…that entrepreneurship “itch” never left so looked at options utilizing my existing work experience with other tangible skills with something that I felt I could make more of an impact which led me with initially going back to school to becoming a Certified Financial Planner. However, after taking my first few insurance courses…I was hooked and stopped. I felt that this was the place where I was supposed to be…an insurance agent. Fortunately for me, I was able to put out some credentials and resumes with insurance firms and during this time…American Family Insurance was expanding their footprint in the Georgia market and I took this leap within knowing much about this company, as well. The year was 2009 and I was fortunate to find an opportunity working for 2 different agents and then in 2011, I was blessed with my owner agency. Been here ever since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, this road hasn’t been the smoothest. Working in the accounting department for 3 companies within a 4 to 5 year period definitely provided some adjusting, especially when you were laid off and it wasn’t your fault. I was laid off from an import/export company one week before my wedding and then a year later from a telecommunication’s company because they were closing their doors! There is definitely some character building going on internally throughout this period. Also, keep in mind, that I was newly married so maintaining a strong faith and mentality was essential part of getting through this process. I also knew that in order to be an entrepreneurship meant that you need access to capital, which I didn’t have…especially not having a job.

What I want readers to understand is that anyone can have an insurance agent or obtain a policy from any online platform however how we differentiate ourselves is that we walk and educate our clients regardless. If someone simply calls us for an auto quote…we certainly will provide that auto quote to them however we look to push pass that and seek to providing a comprehensive plan/quote for all insurance services like their home, life insurance needs, or if they have a small business. We treat prospects like a doctor would if you were a new patient…A doctor will ask about your immediate discomfort however they will seek answers to their overall comprehensive health evaluation which may involve them asking about your family history, current lifestyle, etc. so they will gather a full picture which, in turns, will be better for their prospects turned new clients to providing their services.
How do you define success?
PEACE first a foremost!
I define success by achieving your tailored business goals while satisfying and cultivating your clients to where they do not mind referring you and/or sharing your story within their circles. I’ve been told that “the best compliment is your referral!” I do want that however I need to work hard to build your trust for my agency so I tell my staff that we have to do our part and service ALL clients…no matter so they don’t mind telling their friends, family, and neighbors.
