Hidden Gems: Meet Samuel Thomas of Samuel Thomas Law, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Thomas.

Hi Samuel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised right here in Athens, Georgia, and I’m proud to be the first lawyer in my family and a fourth-generation business owner in this community, following in the footsteps of my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. I studied political science at the University of Georgia before earning my law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2012, and I passed the bar on my first attempt and opened my own firm straight out of law school. Nothing truly prepares you for that as it was very much a swim-or-drown moment, and I had to figure it out fast. Over the past thirteen-plus years, I’ve practiced primarily as a family law attorney, and in 2021 I expanded into immigration law, which has been its own kind of challenge especially under the current administration, where keeping up with the changes can feel like drinking from a fire hose. Outside the office, I regularly volunteer at legal clinics, offering free consultations to people in the community who need guidance. My work ethic comes from watching my father pour everything he had into his business while I was growing up, and my zeal for fighting for clients comes from my mother, who was a fighter in every sense of the word. At the end of the day, I come home to my wife Tonya and our two sons, Richard and Sean — they’re what keep everything in perspective.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? No, not at all. My father passed away during my first year of law school, and that loss hit me so hard that I genuinely questioned whether I wanted to keep going. He was my blueprint, my motivation — and suddenly he was gone right in the middle of one of the hardest things I’d ever undertaken. I pushed through, but it wasn’t easy.

Then in 2019, I lost my mother, and the timing was almost incomprehensible within twenty-four hours, I was closing out the sale of her home and welcoming my first son, Richard, into the world. Grief and joy, all at once, with no time to breathe. Those experiences have shaped me in ways I’m still processing. When you’ve had so much taken from you and so quickly you stop taking anything for granted. Life is short, and it doesn’t ask your permission before it changes on you. That reality lives with me every day, and honestly, I think it makes me a better attorney. When a client walks through my door in the middle of the hardest moment of their life, I’m not just their lawyer I understand, on a personal level, what it means to have the ground shift beneath your feet.

As you know, we’re big fans of Samuel Thomas Law, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Samuel Thomas Law, LLC is a solo practice based right here in Athens, Georgia, and that’s very much by design. I’ve worked with other firms in the past, and those experiences taught me something important about who I am as an attorney. I’m not built for the big firm model. I made a deliberate decision to keep this practice solo, and I have no intention of changing that.

What that means for my clients is that when you hire me, you actually get me. In family law and immigration, you’re dealing with some of the most personal, high-stakes moments of a person’s life such as custody of your children, your marriage, your ability to stay in this country and the last thing you need is to feel like you’ve been handed off to someone you’ve never met. I have paralegals who support the work, but I am the one who knows your case, I am the one at the table, and I am the one you’re going to hear from. That level of direct, hands-on attention is what I’m most proud of, and I think it’s what sets this firm apart. Readers should know that when they walk through our door, they aren’t a file number they’re a person, and they’ll be treated like one from day one.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If you’re in need of legal help whether you’re navigating a difficult family law matter or facing an immigration challenge — I’d love to hear from you. The best way to reach me is by calling the firm directly at 706-546-0999, or you can visit us online at samuelthomaslaw.com to learn more about what we do and how we can help.

My door is open, and the first conversation is always about you and what you’re going through not a sales pitch. If you know someone who needs guidance and can’t afford it, I also encourage them to look into the legal clinics I participate in throughout the community. And if you simply want to support the work, the best thing you can do is spread the word referrals from people who believe in what we’re building here mean everything to a solo practice like mine.
