Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Rad.
Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was originally born in a small town in Pennsylvania. After graduating college, I went back to school to get my masters and became a Physician Assistant. After graduating, I moved to Oregon, where I started my career in the intensive care unit after working through Covid. I decided it was best to be closer to family and found a great opportunity in Atlanta. I took a lead PA position in the ICU and later was promoted to associate chief of the critical care center.
About two years ago, I started my journey in aesthetics. It was a good Jack’s position for me between the serious nature of the ICU and the creative and fun environment of a MedSpa. I started that portion of my career in Alpharetta, then and Sandy Springs, and now I have found my home in Midtown Atlanta.
In the ICU I very much live in two different worlds. In the unit it’s often life and death, and I get to be there for patients in some of the scariest times of their lives.
I also function in leadership which has taught more than I thought it ever could. I can now very easily recognize the good, bad, and ugly when it comes to fellow leaders and employees as well.
I’m also very lucky now that I finally found a healthy, supportive group of advanced practice injectors that I get to learn from and work along side of and the aesthetics part of my life. It’s been a rough and bumpy journey to get to where I am now, and I faced some adversities and toxicities along the way however, now I get to practice in a safe environment where I get to make patients feel good about themselves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been the opposite of a smooth road. I move my entire life, my two pet cockatoos, and my career to a completely new city that I’ve never visited before to start a completely new career. In addition to this, I was investing in a brand new relationship.
Within the first week of starting my new job, I experienced an insurmountable amount of loss, stress, and family health issues.
When I started my career aesthetics, I found out very quickly that not everybody who’s clapping is cheering for you. The industry can be a lot more toxic than I ever imagined, and I unfortunately encountered a handful of people who have been truly awful.
None the last time someone that persevere and at first what I thought was impossible or something that I should quit I now am in a place where I love both sides of my career, I’m thriving, and I look forward to each new day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think what a most proud of is my ability to relate to employees and lead a team effectively. I found it’s one of the hardest things to do, but I also found that it is extremely easy not to be a horrible boss. I simply do the opposite of what I know bad bosses would do.
I have a close friend that tells me the richest you can be is when you have autonomy. Either in your job or in your schedule. And I live by that I’m my personal life and also do my best to provide that to those who I lead.
I’ve recently won an institution wide award for leader of the year in a position that I’ve only been in for two years. I’m extremely proud of this because it was validation and knowing that even though there are many times where I feel like I’m failing, I’m still doing something right. And one of the things that brings me the most joy is bringing happiness to others.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family. Health.
As challenging as family members can be, at the end of the day, they’re still your family. Then all the relationship relationships are always perfect, it’s important for me to spend time with them making memories. You only get one set of family members and when they’re gone, they’re gone.
Working in medicine, I’ve also learned the power of good health and how we often take it for granted. Mental health, physical health. It’s incredibly important to take care of yourself because if you don’t, nobody else will.
