Conversations with Saffa Dar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saffa Dar.

Hi Saffa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Capturing moments has been something I grew up with, with my parents old box of film photos and my mother always yelling, “let me get my camera!” at any given occasion. My love for film photography was born from that.
In grade school, I got my first ever camera— a light blue Sanyo digi-cam. I was absolutely in love. I carried it around like my life depended on it and used the bright pre-saved purple filter any chance I got; on the school bus, at my friend’s birthday party, on the way to family get-togethers. I knew from a very young age that this was something I was incredibly passionate about. Even as I got older, I always found my way back to it.
Two years ago, I decided I wanted to pursue photography as a career. However, about a year ago, I got another job opportunity that I felt like I shouldn’t pass up. A year into that line of work, I was physically exhausted and mentally burnt out. I felt like I was being depleted of my creative energy and knew it was time to move on and fully commit to my craft. It’s been a few months now since I left and started doing photography full-time, and through a mix of dedication and timing, I’ve been able to experience some really amazing opportunities.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. Just like everything else, my passion comes with waves of inspiration and self doubt. I still have times where I feel like I’m not creative enough or not creating enough. However, I’m learning that this is just part of being an artist. I often look back at older photos and reflect on my work, wishing I had done things differently, but that only shows how much I’ve grown and all the things I know now that I didn’t then. Learning to embrace that, while staying committed to growth, has been one of the most challenging but rewarding parts of my journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Saffa Dar is a Pakistani-American editorial fashion and portrait photographer specializing in film photography and soft toned imagery. She takes pride in creating images that aren’t overly polished, but instead hold feeling and memory. She captures people authentically, intentionally but effortlessly. Through her craft, she aims to create art that feels true to each individual.

What’s next?
My plan for the future is to continue growing my photography career full-time and further establish myself in editorial fashion and portrait work. I’m looking forward to expanding my portfolio through larger creative collaborations, traveling for photo shoots, and working with brands and artists whose visions align with mine. Long term, I want to build a body of work that feels cohesive and recognizable, while still staying rooted in film and authenticity.
