Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Barfield.
Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a passion for whiskey for many years. It’s more than just an alcoholic beverage. The brand history, small nuances that influence the whiskey, and the day to day distillery operations have always intrigued me.
In 2020, I created The Whiskey Fly as a way to further my love for the hobby and connect with like minded individuals. It quickly transitioned into helping navigate others to find great whiskey while forming memories and a deeper connection with those I share it with.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The whiskey journey hasn’t been easy. There are constant pressures to stay relevant and take shortcuts. I’ve been tempted to conform to what I think others want me to be. Staying true to self in a loud culture is the key to setting yourself apart and continuing to be a genuine influence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I guide others to see there’s more to whiskey than what you see on the shelf. It’s about the experiences, memories, and connections formed. Some of my best conversations with family/friends have been centered around sharing a glass of whiskey together.
Too many people are caught up on the allocated and hardest to get bottles. I put a lot of my focus highlighting smaller, craft distilleries. These small brands put their heart and soul in to every release and are putting out quality whiskey that would rival many of the sought after bottles. I take great pride in helping shed light on these type of whiskey makers. My proudest moment was collaborating with local legends. ASW Distillery, to help pick a barrel of whiskey that went on to win Double Gold and Best in Class at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition!
