Life & Work with SmoKey VentAge of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to SmoKey VentAge.

SmoKey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
SmoKey VentAge is an Atlanta-born artist, producer, audio engineer, and songwriter whose sound blends soul, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul into a timeless, reflective experience. Music has been his passion since age five, beginning on drums and expanding to piano, vocals, and live performances at school and church. By high school, he was writing and producing his own songs, performing in plays and talent shows, and earning the Performing Arts Award at North Atlanta High.

After a brief run with R&B group T3 (The Trinity), SmoKey launched his solo career, balancing smooth, soulful vocals with dynamic rap versatility. SmoKey attended Full Sail University from 2011-2012 in the Recording Arts program. He writes, produces, mixes, and masters his own projects, including Bachelor Chapter 1: The Rebel (2019) and Bachelor Chapter 2: Rotation (2020).

Through his music and visual style — blending formal minimalism, streetwear, and subtle 90s retro flair — SmoKey crafts an intimate, stylish, and authentic brand. With the Bachelor Chapter 3 era, he continues to share emotional, reflective storytelling, inviting listeners to connect and let the soul vent.

Who does Smokey make music for-

Soulful, reflective music for people who move with intention, independence, and integrity.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge helped shape me into the artist and producer I am today. One of the earliest obstacles I faced was simply getting people to take me seriously. When I first started singing and learning keyboard as a child, a lot of people overlooked me, and at times I was even teased. Instead of letting that discourage me, I used it as motivation to improve my skills and continue growing musically.

As I got older and became more serious about pursuing music, another challenge was the lack of support, mentorship, and resources. While I knew talented musicians and producers through church and other connections, I struggled to find people willing to guide me, mentor me, or open doors for opportunities. Studio time and professional production were also expensive, especially as a high school student without the finances to afford it.

Because of that, I had to become resourceful and teach myself. I started taking music technology classes at school, where I learned how to make beats and record music. I would create instrumentals at school, take them home to write to, and then come back to record them. Eventually, I was able to get my own equipment and begin recording and producing from home, which gave me the freedom to fully develop my sound and creativity.

Looking back, those obstacles taught me resilience, consistency, and self-belief. They forced me to work harder, learn independently, and stay committed to my vision even when people didn’t fully understand it yet.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an artist and creative, I specialize in music production, songwriting, recording, and vocal performance. I’ve always been passionate about creating music that feels authentic, emotional, and cinematic while still being relatable to everyday people. A big part of my work is blending strong storytelling with melody and production to create records that people can truly connect with.

What makes my journey unique is that I developed many of my skills independently. I learned how to produce, record, and shape my sound through years of hands-on experience, experimentation, and consistency. Over time, that helped me become more than just an artist — it helped me become a creator with a full understanding of the music-making process from start to finish.

I’m especially proud of how far I’ve come despite limited resources and opportunities early on. A lot of my growth came from teaching myself, staying persistent, and continuing to create even when people didn’t fully understand the vision yet. Being able to build my own sound, continue improving my craft, and gain recognition for my artistry is something I take a lot of pride in.

What sets me apart is my versatility and my willingness to evolve. I’m involved creatively in multiple areas of the process, whether it’s writing, producing, arranging, or developing concepts. I also try to create music with intention — music that not only sounds good, but actually says something and leaves an impression. My goal has always been to create timeless work that connects with people on a deeper level while continuing to grow as both an artist and creative entrepreneur.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
One thing I love most about Atlanta is its growth, creativity, and cultural impact. As someone who was born and raised here, I’ve had the opportunity to watch the city evolve over the years, and in many ways that evolution has created more opportunities, especially within music, entertainment, and entrepreneurship. Atlanta has become a city where creatives can build, connect, and truly make an impact, and I think that energy is a big part of what makes the city special.

At the same time, one thing I like least is that some of the originality and authenticity that made Atlanta unique has been lost along the way. Growth is important, but sometimes rapid change can cause certain cultural elements, communities, and creative spaces to disappear or become overlooked.

From a music perspective, I love that Atlanta is such a major influence on the industry, but I also wish there was more visibility and support for a wider range of artists and sounds. The city is known globally for trap and party music, and while those genres have absolutely shaped the culture, Atlanta’s talent goes far beyond that. There are incredible R&B, neo-soul, alternative, and message-driven artists here as well who deserve just as much appreciation and exposure.

Overall, Atlanta is still one of the most inspiring cities for creatives, and I’m proud to be from here. I just hope the city continues to grow while still preserving the diversity, originality, and authenticity that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
