Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemima.
Hi Jemima, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really started from wanting something clean that I could trust in my home. As I became more intentional about the products I used in my everyday routines, I realized it was harder than I expected to find candles that felt both safe and thoughtfully made. So I decided to try making my own.
As I got into it, it became something more personal. I have always connected scent to home and memory. A single fragrance can take you somewhere instantly. It can remind you of a space, a moment, or even a feeling you did not realize you were holding onto. There is something really powerful about that.
Growing up, those small sensory moments created a sense of comfort and familiarity for me, and I found myself wanting to recreate that feeling in a more intentional way.
What started as a simple solution turned into something I truly loved. I began creating candles that were not just about how they smell, but how they make you feel. Calm. Grounded. At home in your space.
That is how Candleness came to life. Over time, it has grown into more than candles. I have expanded into room sprays, fresheners, and aromatherapy pieces, all designed to bring that same feeling into everyday life.
At the end of the day, it is about creating products that feel good, that you can trust, and that help turn ordinary moments at home into something a little more meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a completely smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to keep going while carrying a lot at once. There were seasons where I was balancing caregiving, work, and building the business, and it was exhausting in a way that was not just physical, but mental as well. I had to learn how to slow down and be honest with myself about my limits, which is not always easy when you are building something you care deeply about.
Another challenge has been the process of getting the product right. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people do not see. I have had moments where I felt confident in a direction, whether it was a container or a formula, and then it would fail during testing. That can be discouraging, especially when you are trying to create something clean, safe, and consistent.
Even customer feedback has been complex at times. People may describe what they want, but when you actually build and test the product, it does not always behave the way you expect. I have had to learn how to listen, but also how to trust my own standards and not compromise on quality.
I think the real challenge has been staying patient through all of that. Wanting to grow, but also knowing that I cannot rush the process if I want to build something that truly aligns with my values.
In the end, those challenges have shaped how intentional I am now. They have taught me to slow down, to be more thoughtful in my decisions, and to build something that I can stand behind with confidence.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Candleness?
My business is centered around creating clean, intentional home fragrance products that transform everyday spaces into something calming, comforting, and meaningful. I specialize in candles, room sprays, car fresheners, and aromatherapy pieces, all designed to elevate simple moments at home.
Each product is made with a strong focus on clean, safe ingredients. I use plant-based soy wax, phthalate-free fragrance oils, and non-toxic materials, with no paraffin. That standard is really important to me, because I wanted to create products that people can feel comfortable using regularly in their homes without second-guessing what they are bringing into their space.
Beyond being clean, I focus deeply on the experience. I design scents that are not just pleasant, but that linger and truly transform the atmosphere. I want each fragrance to create a feeling. Calm, relaxed, refreshed, and grounded. There is also a nostalgic element to my work. Many of my scents are inspired by the idea of home and memory, capturing moments that feel warm, familiar, and connected to time spent with loved ones.
What sets my brand apart is the combination of that clean standard with intentional scent design. It is not just about how something smells in the moment, but how it fills a space and how it makes you feel over time. I also lean into a clean, minimal aesthetic that reflects that same sense of ease and clarity.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the quality and the consistency of the products, and the fact that I have built this on my own. Hearing customers describe the fragrances as warm, long-lasting, and comforting is something I value deeply, because that is exactly the experience I set out to create.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that my brand is rooted in clean, safe, high-quality ingredients, and in creating products that help make home feel like a place of comfort, connection, and intention.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I try to keep the tools and resources I rely on very simple and intentional. On the practical side, I use platforms like Canva to design and bring my ideas to life, especially when it comes to building and sharing my brand.
Beyond that, what supports me the most is not so much digital, but how I choose to live day to day. My faith plays a big role in that. Spending time in prayer, reading the Bible, and having moments of quiet reflection help me stay centered and clear in both life and business.
I also place a lot of value on rest and being present. Observing the Sabbath, taking time to slow down, and creating space to reset has been essential for me. It helps me avoid burnout and stay connected to what really matters.
I love being in nature as well. There is something about stepping outside, even for a short time, that brings clarity and calm. It allows me to pause, reflect, and come back with a more grounded perspective.
Overall, I have found that doing my best does not come from constantly adding more, but from creating space. Space to think, to rest, and to stay aligned with my values.
