Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Hooper.
Hi Vanessa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Creativity was part of my upbringing. As a child, I spent countless hours in my mother’s bespoke bakery—a vibrant storefront that was both a family business and a remarkable success. I watched, learned, and absorbed her craft, captivated by the rhythm of baking and especially drawn to the artistry of wedding and event cakes. The delicate work of creating sugar flowers and intricate adornments left a lasting impression, quietly shaping my own creative path.
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa—a city defined by its breathtaking beauty, cultural richness, and striking contrasts. That sense of place inspired the name Capetown Creations. I wanted my work to reflect the city that influenced me so deeply: visually distinctive, richly layered, and anything but ordinary. From aesthetics to flavor, my goal has always been to bring that same sense of beauty and diversity to the table for my clients.
Baking has always felt intuitive to me. Over the years, I baked casually for friends and family, but about five years ago something shifted. I caught the baking “bug” in a big way and began experimenting more intentionally—pushing myself creatively and technically. What started as engagement cakes and bridal shower cookies quickly grew into birthday cakes, increasingly elaborate royal icing designs, and eventually full wedding commissions. One of the most meaningful milestones was creating the wedding cake for my son and daughter‑in‑law—a labor of love that was as demanding as it was unforgettable, and worth every single moment.
In an era dominated by social media and algorithms, I’ve chosen a different approach. I’ve allowed my business to grow organically, focusing my energy on craft rather than constant online presence. That decision has paid off in the most gratifying way. My calendar is already full—with wedding cakes, special‑event desserts, and, of course, plenty of cookies—each one an opportunity to create something deeply personal, beautiful, and memorable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a very smooth road and I’ve had the benefit of really just taking my time to learn and grow. I am sure that I’ll come across some hurdles but for now, the journey is exciting, exhausting, joyful and terrifying all at once. The biggest challenge would be keeping up with all the new techniques and styles and trends!!
