Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Surles.
Hi Jamila, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in 2015 to utilize marketing and media to create ways for small businesses and minority-owned businesses to thrive. I saw the impact that media and entertainment had on people and wanted to see what I could do mesh the two worlds in order to encourage productivity. I started Epic Entourage and wanted to see how creativity and innovation could work in bringing more attention to everyday business owners who are working hard and get them the same marketing and visibility as large corporations. As apart of my business I utilized interviews and video in order to speak with business owners, entertainers, and innovators to inspire others by having them to share their journey’s and introduce various possibilities.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road because of the unconventional concepts that are sometimes present when creativity is not always understood. It is hard having a work-life balance being that I have to travel and networking is a frequent part of building the company. You have to come with originality and the ability to think outside the box which can be challenging at times. Sometimes, there are moments of creators block and there are everyday life challenges that bring a bit of difficulties but hurdles are made to get through and over.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have taken project management skills from the healthcare industry and utilized them when planning for launches of new ways to use the media, events, and video projects to create content that resonates with our audiences. I am most proud of the ability to pivot despite the constant nuances of the industry and the relationships we have built along the way. We have built a network of influencers that have significant impact and have created a reality show to provide a way for business owners to introduce their services.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would say that I was lucky to have met some great individuals along the way that have given me opportunities. I don’t consider anything bad luck because I take anything that happens and consider them lessons and learning opportunities.
