Today we’d like to introduce you to David Becker.
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The last straw for me was when I was working at a cabinet shop in S. Dekalb when my paychecks started to bounce! The Broken Chair was born over a beer with a good friend. The idea was to put my furniture repair skills to work that I had learned from artisans in the cities of Denver & Atlanta. Finding work was tough in the beginning, so I quickly began taking on handyman jobs. As that progressed, I began installing doors which I soon realized that was a trade in itself. I became very proficient with doors and took on some cabinet builds which added to the Broken Chairs’ growing list of services. Years later, Atlanta had finally discovered the Broken Chair for its true purpose. To conserve, repair, restore and refinish the most prized & cherished pieces of furniture. Today, I offer 3 main categories of services which include furniture, custom carpentry & cabinetry, and household doors. My favorite part of the job is fullfilling all of my customers requests and on occasion leaving them speechless!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. It has not been a smooth road. Every entrepreneurial route is going to have its struggles, obstacles, and setbacks. Its important to remember none are permanent. My current struggle is spreading myself too thin while maintaining growth with my very high standards. Each day, I wake up ready to offer the very best to my customers.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I provide a few different services. The first category is furniture: any given piece may need restoration/conservation, repairs, or even a complete refinish. Most often customers tell me the end result their looking for and I’ll tell them what it’ll take to get there. The second is custom carpentry & cabinetry. Often, my customers bring their imagine, drawings, or something seen on tv or instagram. My favorite request was helping a gentlemen create a speakeasy in his home by sealing off a room with cabinets that functioned as secret doors. The 3rd and last category is interior and exterior household doors. The Broken Chair will refinish painted antique doors, provide door installing services, we also build custom doors on request. Some parts of town I’m still known as the door guy. I’d say I am most proud of the knowledge I have obtained and my ability to put it to use through my hands and business practices.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. -Wayne Gretzky or Michael Scott?
On a more serious note, I believe strongly in taking the necessary risks for success when you believe in yourself, your product and or services. Sometimes that means starting over… My best advice to any individual is to take the shot!
