Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Lawery.
Hi Chris , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got the photo bug from my dad. He used to take tons of photos when he traveled. When he returned from a trip, he would put together slideshows, and that hooked me. I then started as a photographer in high school on the yearbook staff. After high school, I went to a college to learn photography. I then moved to Orlando and started assisting and working the journey of becoming a true photographer. In 1995 I moved to Atlanta and kept assisting. In early 2000 I broke out on my own with another photographer and started Davies + Lawery. We shot everything from editorial to commercial photography. I was asked to work for a company as a full time in-house photographer… At first I declined and a year later they made me a nice offer and I took it. I was at Accent Decor for 9 years shooting all sorts of glass, ceramics etc. I then decided I wanted to work on my own and started Chris Lawery Photography.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would love to say it was all smooth, but owning your own business has it’s struggles. You are the photographer, marketer, and accountant, all of it. Sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do a lot of architectural photography for commercial builders and real estate. It really depends on the weather a good bit, but it’s all in the planning. I try to make sure my images show the spaces in their best light. I can also shoot/edit video and am a part 107 drone pilot.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
You have to be flexible with clients. Times and dates change, so it’s a must!
