Today we’d like to introduce you to DéZhiona Carmichael.
Hi DéZhiona, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It turns out I had been working in the PR space long before I realized there was a name for it. As a teenager, I helped private businesses with social media marketing and even created websites. I also tagged along to red carpet premieres and product launches here and there, unknowingly gaining early exposure to the world of media and public relations. Creativity always came naturally to me. Whether it was writing poetry, photography, videography, painting, or drawing, I always found myself immersed in creative expression.
At the time, however, “being creative” was not a college major. After graduating from high school, I went on to study criminal justice, driven by a deep curiosity about human behavior and the “why” behind situations. Criminology had long fascinated me, and for years, I was certain I would become a district attorney.
But life has a way of redirecting you.
After completing my degree, I entered the corporate world — a major shift from where I imagined myself. I spent years in technology sales, marketing, and business partner relations, learning how to communicate effectively, build relationships, and navigate high-level business environments. While the work sharpened my professional skills, I eventually realized I wanted something more purpose-driven and creative.
That journey eventually led me into the nonprofit space, where I found myself using the same creative and strategic talents I had carried since my teenage years. It was there that I truly began to recognize my passion for public relations, media strategy, and brand storytelling.
Through hands-on experience, community engagement, and leading public-facing initiatives, I was able to strengthen my skills in communication, organization, branding, and audience connection — all of which continue to shape the way I serve clients today.
I later gained formal education from the University of Colorado Boulder, but much of my growth still came through hands-on experience. Throughout my career as a publicist, I’ve written and distributed press releases, helped organizations gain media exposure on television, developed websites, and executed strategic initiatives designed to strengthen public visibility and engagement.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth building is ever easy. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty, make mistakes, adapt, and grow through experience.
Public relations is not a simple industry. It requires trust, consistency, strategy, and genuine relationship-building. I believe in leading with integrity rather than selling unrealistic expectations or overnight success.
Because of that, I am never afraid of a challenge. In fact, challenges often create the greatest opportunities for growth, evolution, and impact.
As you know, we’re big fans of Carmic Media. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Here at Carmic Media, you write the vision — and we make it public.
We work with authors, speakers, influencers, business owners, and brands looking to strengthen their public presence, increase visibility, and create lasting impact.
As a full-service PR firm, we help clients build their brands across both digital and public-facing spaces. Our services include website development and updates, logo and graphic design, media relations, product launches, red carpet and premiere support, event publicity, and strategic brand visibility. Whether launching a new brand, promoting an event, or expanding digital visibility, our goal is to help visionaries bring their ideas to life with professionalism, strategy, and purpose.
We offer both retainer-based PR services and one-time event support tailored to each client’s specific needs. Beginning in July 2026, Carmic Media will also introduce Crisis Communication Training designed to help brands strategically navigate the ever-changing landscape of consumers, public perception, and reputation management.
I consider myself “The Publicist for Visionaries.” To me, that means our clients are bold, innovative, and outside-the-box thinkers — and we genuinely love that. We believe in seeing the vision through to completion just as much as our clients do. We are not satisfied until the work is executed with excellence. That level of dedication, care, and genuine investment in every client’s vision is what truly sets us apart.
We encourage everyone to book a consultation because every brand needs its own kind of TLC. One-size-fits-all strategies do not build lasting brands. We take the time to understand your goals, challenges, and vision so we can develop a strategy specifically designed for you.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Here are 3 things I’ve learned in this world of public relations:
1. You will never go far trying to fit into someone else’s mold. Create your own lane instead — that’s where real growth, impact, and success happen.
2. Do not stretch yourself thin trying to be everywhere. You may miss an event or two, but that also means you can show up stronger, more present, and more effective for the opportunities that truly matter.
3. Know your boundaries. It is never necessary to sacrifice your brand’s integrity or image just for attention and publicity. The right audience will find you, connect with your message, and stay because of authenticity — not desperation.
