Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrice Boatswain.
Hi Latrice, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career as a hairstylist began at a very young age, driven by a passion for art and a love for creating with my hands. I started by observing different techniques and practicing on friends and family, taking advantage of every opportunity to refine my craft.
After graduating high school early, I attended Florence-Darlington Technical College before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at The Art Institute of Atlanta. Graduating in 2008, I gained a deep understanding of design, symmetry, and color. While I enjoyed graphic design, my true calling remained in the hair industry. Two months after graduation, I enrolled at Empire Beauty School to obtain my Master Cosmetologist license.
The professional start of my career in a salon led to an incredible opportunity to travel to Miami, Florida and California. Having previously worked in Detroit and South Carolina, this experience showed me that the sky is the limit. Each time I returned to Atlanta, I had a broader outlook on my future.
This inspired me to open my first salon, Atress Exhibit Salon. My goal is to continue building the Atress brand by combining my artistic background in graphic design with my expertise in cosmetology.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey as a hairstylist have been smooth but with any career It will come with challenges, but I believe this was my God given gift. So I prayed for guidance when i didnt have the answers. God always placed someone in my path to help me navigate through.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do this technique called nubian flattwist. It’s updo hairstyle , where I add synthetic hair to create loops, Swirls and cris crossing designs. It’s like I create art with my client hair.
I am most proud I’ve had such longevity in the hair industry just doing what i envision and creating it. Being in my own lane and not being concerned about trends But staying relevant with the times and being true to myself and abilities.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think in this industry you have to be open-minded and be willing to listen to what the client needs.
