Today we’d like to introduce you to Daryl-Jarod Randolph.
Hi Daryl-Jarod, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been passionate about storytelling. Whether it was acting, music, or writing, I knew I wanted to create work that could resonate with people and leave a lasting impression.
Like many independent creators, my path hasn’t been traditional. I’ve worked a variety of jobs over the years while continuing to invest in my creative goals. Instead of waiting for the “perfect time” or the right opportunity, I chose to build my own.
That mindset shaped the way I approach my career and gave me the confidence to create opportunities for myself instead of waiting for them. It continues to push me to grow, embrace new challenges, and keep building a career that’s true to who I am.
Today, I’m continuing to grow as an artist while building a career in entertainment centered on meaningful stories that connect with people. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the moment I stopped waiting for permission to create was the moment my dream truly began.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s made the journey even more meaningful.
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing full-time work with pursuing a career in entertainment. There have been countless days where I’d work long shifts and still come home to write scripts, design characters, learn new production techniques, or coordinate with voice actors because I believed in what I was building.
Another challenge has been independently producing a large creative project without the backing of a major studio. Every step has required patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep growing. As technology evolved, I adapted my production process to make the project stronger while staying true to my original vision.
Looking back, every obstacle taught me something valuable. It forced me to become more patient, more adaptable, and more determined. Every setback became an opportunity to strengthen both myself and my work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At my core, I’m a storyteller. I enjoy exploring different creative mediums, but they all serve the same purpose: creating work that resonates with people and leaves a lasting impression.
My biggest creative focus is The Fillmores, an adult animated comedy series that I’ve developed independently from the ground up. The show is loosely inspired by my own life and experiences throughout adulthood, but it’s very much its own world with original characters and stories. I created The Fillmores because I wanted to see more Black characters and LGBTQ+ characters in adult animation whose stories felt authentic, hilarious, and fully realized. I also wanted to build a world that feels familiar, where audiences can see a little bit of themselves, their families, or their neighbors reflected in the characters and stories.
As the creator, I’ve been involved in every aspect of the project, from writing and character development to overseeing production and collaborating with voice actors. What I’m most proud of isn’t just creating an animated series, but seeing an idea grow into something tangible through persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning. Every challenge has helped me grow, both as a creator and as a storyteller.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to wear many hats while never losing sight of the bigger picture. I embrace every part of the creative process, and my goal is to tell stories that feel genuine, relatable, and memorable while continuing to grow as both an artist and a storyteller.
After years of bringing it to life, The Fillmores premieres this fall, and I’m excited to finally share it with the world.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t think of myself as someone who takes reckless risks. I believe in taking thoughtful, calculated ones.
Choosing to build an independent career in entertainment is certainly a risk. It requires years of work, a significant investment of time and resources, and a willingness to believe in your vision long before everyone else sees it. But I also believe there’s a different kind of risk that’s even greater: never pursuing the work that truly excites you.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that taking risks doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means being willing to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward when the path changes. Every challenge has pushed me to improve rather than give up.
For me, success isn’t about avoiding challenges. It’s about having the courage to keep creating while trusting the vision you’ve committed to. The biggest risk wasn’t creating an animated series. It would have been convincing myself not to try.
