Today we’d like to introduce you to Krooked Bones.
Hi Krooked, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started playing finger picking piedmont blues guitar and hill country blues guitar when I was 15. I attended Virginia commonwealth university to study classical guitar and cello alongside all the instruments perusing a music education degree. I started a tree service 12 years ago and have been running this company to pay for my home studio, band merch and musical equipment to persue my passion of playing hill country blues for the metro Atlanta area and hopefully someday touring the southeast to visit my guitar heroes graves to pay my respect. Another goal for my band is to play with the descendants of the art form I’ve chosen to pursue professionally. We’ve recorded 3 albums over 2 years and played dozens of shows in Georgia to well received crowds. Due to both of us running businesses and gage having joint custody of his son it makes us practice and record sparingly. Mostly due to the undefeated nature of Atlanta traffic making us commute 2+ hrs one way after working outside all day when we’re free of auxiliary commitments. Today we have a handful of gigs lined up, a Milwaukee pack out full of merch, dozens of songs yet to be recorded and an album of covers in the piedmont/hill country blues fingerpicking style in the line up. Life is short and I hope to be able to share my appreciation of a dying art form that’s had a slight resurgence in popularity due to the movie sinners and other blues men who make this music more accessible to the masses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s feast or famine. I’ll get a lot of work lined up and jobs sold. But I’m competing with 2500+ other businesses that provide the same services, I aim to tend to tress instead of take them down. Being honest, upfront about costs and where the customers dollar goes has helped me continue my business with little to no income focused on advertising relying on word of mouth to promote my company’s services.
With music, it’s always been easy. I don’t get anxious about shows due to constantly practicing and having over 3 decades of performing for amphitheaters, cathedrals and a sold out 9:30 club decades ago conditioned me to be a professional performer. Taking as little time to set up and breakdown stage equipment due to gigging so much as well as being an iatse stage hand/rigger for 9 years put a lot of how a music production truly works in perspective.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I climb trees and take care of them prescribing them surgeries, chemical treatment plans and nurturing the soil they grow out of.
I’ve saved a lot of Atlanta trees from being removed. I don’t need to make $3k by noon murdering trees, I need to build customer relations based off of trust and doing agreed work to a T.
With music, I’m proud of writing original music, lyrics and showcasing my skill set to a live audience. when people move or dance to your music it fulfills and validates my efforts as a musician.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Money comes and goes.
People fade in and out of your life.
But how you made people feel sticks with them forever.
